Bagration: Axis Allies
In 1944 Stalin’s Red army is on the attack. While it  throws the Germans out of Byelorussia, it also goes about defeating Germany’s allies; Finland, Romania and Hungary. The Romanians hold off the first Soviet attacks, but a second massive offensive in August 1944 sees them overwelmed. They surrender and swap sides to fight alongside the Soviets. Meanwhile, the Finns also fight for their survival as the Soviets attempt to steamroll them out of the war. They fight the Soviets to a standstill and agree a peace, but are forced to to turn on the Germans. Then three massive Soviet Fronts turn on Hungary, defended by six German and Hungarian armies. The great red sledgehammer is soon swinging, as the Soviets and Romanians launch an assault toward Budapest. Axis armoured forces attempt to stop the encirclement of the city. This savage and bitter struggle will last for 100 gruelling days.

Command Cards are entirely optional and can be added to your force in two ways. You can add them to your normal point cost, just as you would add a unit to your force, or you and your opponent can agree on a set amount of points that each may use just to add Command Cards to your lists.

Many Command Cards are hidden until they are used, so you’re never quite sure what your opponent’s battle plans are until they are revealed. While hidden, Command Cards do not affect their attached unit—a player must reveal them if they wish to gain the benefits of the card. Some Command Cards must be revealed at the start of the game; these cards are used to build your army and have the keyword 'Build'.

Command Card Previews

As you might expect, the Bagration: Hungarian pack has many of the same Command Cards as other nations like Softskin Transport, Lucky, etc. However, you will also find a great variety of cards for Warriors, Unit and Formation builds, as well as cards that enhance a particular part of your Forces capabilities. You will find plenty of flavourful cards as well to give your force a feel all of its own.

As an example, there are a number of different build cards. Some do simple things like the Assault Pioneer Platoon, which changes a Rifle Platoon into a veteran pioneer unit by adding an option for a Flame-thrower, making their Skill Veteran 3+, and giving the better abilities to clear minefields and to dig-in. The Assault Pioneer Company simply allowed you to build a Formation of these.

Another Formation Build cards is the 1st Cavalry Division Huszár Squadron that allows you to build a Squadron mounted cavalry based around the Huszár Troop (see page 69 of Bagration: Axis Allies). As well at the formation build card there is a card to build their horse artillery battery.

There are also Paratrooper, Volunteer Rifle, Border Guard, Scouts, and Fresh Divisions build cards.

Another build card that is worth mentioning in particular is the Zrínyi I 44M Assault Gun. This lets you field a prototype of the initial Zrínyi design armed with the German 75mm gun (as found in the StuG and Hetzer. The parts to make this model are included in the Zrínyi plastic kit.

There are six Warriors to field with the Hungarians. One of these is Ervin Tarczay who fought through 1944 and into 1945, first in a Turán, then a Tiger, then a Panther, and finally commanding a Panzer IV. He is a Formation Commander who Hits on 2+ in Assaults, Counterattacks on a 3+, and re-rolls failed Rolls to Hit with his main gun.

Or you could field Josef Barankay commanded the 1st Assault Gun Battalion in 1944. He sold his flat in 1944 before heading to the front as he thought he would not need it again. He was killed in an air raid, but not before leading his battalion successfully in battles in Galacia.
