Cobra

Cobra
Returning to Normandy for the release of Overlord and Atlantik Wall gives us an opportunity to dust off old armies and replay some of the most memorable battles of World War Two. Over the next six weeks we are going to share some of our favourite scenarios, rules and articles.

We breakout this week with Operation Cobra and follow the fortunes of the American tankers assigned with the task of breaking out of the Normandy beachhead and the elite units of the Waffen-SS who’s task it is to stop them.

Missions & Scenarios

Barkmann’s Corner
Barkmann’s Corner refights Barkmann’s famous battles where he almost single handedly stopped columns of American tanks with his Panther, then somehow nursed his stricken vehicle back to the workshops.

Oberscharführer Ernst Barkmann
In January 1944, Das Reich was ordered to southern France for refit and Barkmann’s battalion was upgraded to the new model Panther. A month after D-Day, elements of the division went into action against American forces near St. Lô. This includes the correct Stalker rule for Barkmann.

Operation Cobra:
24 July to 4 August 1944
Since the initial landings on D-Day American forces in the west of Normandy had been fighting their way through hellish bocage country. Each bocage-lined field was another battle, to be taken against fierce German opposition, before moving on to the next for more of the same. Wheeled and half-track vehicles were forced into the narrow country lanes, where they were vulnerable to ambush, and tanks ran the risk of exposing their vulnerable belly armour every time they attempted to cross these horrendous stone reinforced hedgerows. Getting across the bocage was a task in itself.

17. SS-Panzergrenadierdivision
The 17. SS-Panzergrenadierdivision was ordered to be formed near Poitiers, France in October 1943. Many of the recruits were Volksdeutch (ethnic Germans) from Romania. The process began on 15 November 1943. The division was granted the title “Götz von Berlichingen” after the 15th century German knight and mercenary Gottfried von Berlichingen (c. 1480 – 1562) from Hornberg in Württemberg.
