German Mixed Panzer Company (GEAB24)

German Mixed Panzer Company (GEAB24)
In 1943, the Ghost Division participated in the Battle of Kursk as a part of the 48th Panzer Corps on the southern pincer attack. For the attack, the division had received new models of Panzer III and IV tanks with additional armour and better weapons, and new Flammpanzer III tanks. The division’s infantry was also fitted with new armoured half-tracks and self-propelled guns to give them additional firepower.

The 7.5cm gun version of the Panzer III proved an able support weapon but by the summer of 1943, despite its long and proven battle record, the tank was starting to show its age. To remedy this, it was uparmoured to bring it up to date. Ideally, the panzer divisions were meant to have two battalions of Panthers and one with Panzer IV tanks. While the tankers waited for the production lines to catch up with this demand, the units had to make do with older, but uparmoured, Panzer IIIs.

The bulk of the panzer regiment in 1942 was equipped with the reliable Panzer III tank. Early versions of the tank gave exceptional service, but were under-armoured when Soviet medium tanks arrived in numbers. Uparmoured panzers arrived later in the year, putting the tanks back on an even footing.

The latest model of the Panzer III uses the newly perfected HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) ammunition in its short 7.5cm gun. This gives it the penetrative power of a much longer weapon. As HEAT relies on explosive energy rather than brute force to penetrate armour, its effectiveness does not reduce with range.

One company from each panzer battalion was equipped with Panzer IV tanks. By 1942, these medium companies were a mix of short and long barrelled tanks.

As more and more Soviet T-34 tanks began to show up on the battlefield, the older shortbarrelled Panzer IVs began to be pushed into an auxiliary role, supporting the more powerful long-barrelled tanks with valuable artillery fire and smoke screens.

With their low, turretless silhouette The StuG proved most effective in defensive roles and were especially deadly when carrying out ambushes. Schürzen skirts were added for further protection from enemy hand-held anti-tank weapons, such as the bazooka or anti-tank rifles.it can be readily stashed in terrain or set up in a deadly ambush. Its armour helps it survive in case it receives incoming fire. These self-propelled guns were perfect tanks from a variety of missions German Mixed Panzer Company (GEAB24)

The Hornisse (Hornet) was another brand new vehicle rushed to the front to take part in Operation Citadel. The vehicle was armed with the new and powerful 8.8cm PaK43 gun, the same found in the Ferdinand heavy tank-hunters.

Built on the Panzer IV hull, the Hornisse was easy to maintain, and devastated Soviet armour wherever they were stationed. It had 30mm of hull front armour, but only 10mm on its superstructure. It had a crew of four and an additional machine gun for local and anti-aircraft defence.

The panzergrenadiers provided the panzer divisions with their own mobile infantry support. Equipped with the latest heavy weapons, these troops were essential for clearing out objectives in terrain that was not suited for the tanks, such as cities. They were heavily armed, with more MG34 machine-guns than the standard infantry platoons in a infantry division.

The armoured Panzergrenadier Company are the elite of the mechanised infantry. Instead of trucks they are equipped with armoured Sd Kfz 251 half-tracks giving them the mobility and armour to accompany the tanks into the fighting. The Sd Kfz 251 half-track served its passengers admirably during Germany's early blitzkrieg campaigns in 1941. Their armour allows them to support the tanks with infantry assault power.
