The Finns found the submachine-gun very handy in the close confines of forest combat. As more Suomi and captured Soviet PPSh submachine-guns have become available, whole platoons have been equipped with them.

Finnish Light Infantry Platoon (Jääkäri)

The Jääkäri were Finland’s elite light infantry. The Jääkäri troops were initially Finnish volunteers served with the Germans, training as Jägers (elite light infantry), during World War One as the Royal Prussian 27th Jäger Battalion. They fought on the northern flank of the eastern front from 1916.

Bagration: Axis Allies
In 1944 Stalin’s Red army is on the attack. While it  throws the Germans out of Byelorussia, it also goes about defeating Germany’s allies; Finland, Romania and Hungary. The Romanians hold off the first Soviet attacks, but a second massive offensive in August 1944 sees them overwelmed. They surrender and swap sides to fight alongside the Soviets. Meanwhile, the Finns also fight for their survival as the Soviets attempt to steamroll them out of the war. They fight the Soviets to a standstill and agree a peace, but are forced to to turn on the Germans. Then three massive Soviet Fronts turn on Hungary, defended by six German and Hungarian armies. The great red sledgehammer is soon swinging, as the Soviets and Romanians launch an assault toward Budapest. Axis armoured forces attempt to stop the encirclement of the city. This savage and bitter struggle will last for 100 gruelling days.

At the outbreak of the Civil War in Finland Jägers were released from German service and 2,000 volunteers were soon fighting to put down the communists. Their contribution to the White victory and Finnish independence was critical. They provided crucial leadership and training to the mostly green troops of the Civil War.

The Jääkäri continued their role as elite light infantry during the Winter and Continuation Wars. The Jääkäri (yay-kah-ree, or hunters) scout ahead and provide flank security. Many Finnish soldiers are hunters and woodsmen, familiar with the country and completely at home in it.

Many Finnish soldiers are hunters and woodsmen, familiar with the country and completely at home in it. Their ability to advance silently and undetected is remarkable. They are aggressively led and their role is as much assault as reconnaissance.
