Observing the effectiveness of prolonged artillery bombardments, it was concluded that the Imperial Japanese Army required a weapon of similar capabilities in order to keep pace with the military forces in the west. The new design was ready in 1934 and after some fine tuning went into production in 1937. The Type 96 howitzer was capable of 65° of elevation; had a range of nearly 12km and could be transported by a team of six horses. The Type 96 first saw action in the second Sino-Japanese war where it earned high praise for its battlefield effectiveness.  It continued its stellar service throughout World War Two where it was considered the most modern and effective weapon in the Japanese arsenal.
