25mm SA-34 Portee (FR160)

25mm SA-34 Portee (FR160)
includes one 25mm SA-34 Portee with crew.

The term portee is used to describe a truck which carries a gun on its bed. The gun in question is not a permanent fixture of the vehicle and can be fired either while still within the confines of the truck bed or can be unloaded and fired in a more orthodox fashion.

Blitzkrieg
Blitzkrieg was the first Flames Of War supplement for Early-war; covering the German invasion of Poland and France during 1939-1940. It features German, Polish, French and British forces.

Blitzkrieg
25mm SA-34 Portee (FR160) The portee has the advantage of making the traditional static anti-tank gun more mobile and allows the use of fire and manoeuvre tactics. The portee would assume a firing position, fire at the enemy before quickly shifting to another location before its position was revealed to the enemy.

While the term portee is more often than not used to describe such vehicles used by British and Commonwealth forces during the early stages of the Second World War, the French had adopted the practice as early as 1938.
Dismounting Portee Guns
Some guns were carried ‘en portée’ on the load bed of a truck rather than being towed, in order to allow the gun to fire on the move.

A Tank team with the Portee attribute may Dismount its weapon by Sending the vehicle to the Rear and replacing it with a Gun team equipped with the same weapon, as if it were Unlimbering from a Transport team.

A Gun team Dismounted from a Portee may Mount again by Bringing Forward the vehicle as if it were a Transport team. Replace the Gun team with the Portee Tank team rather than placing the vehicle near the Gun team.

Portee guns may deploy as Dismounted Gun teams having already Sent their vehicle to the Rear.
Laffly utilised their S20TL truck to mount the 25mm SA-34 anti-tank gun. These factory-built vehicles featured ramps to allow for the gun to be disembarked and also allowed the gun to fire towards the front of the vehicle or towards the rear, the latter allowing for a quick getaway after firing a shot. The windscreen was also modified to fold down to allow for a greater field of fire. 25mm SA-34 Portee (FR160)

Forty of these vehicles were delivered to the French Army during the winter of 1939-40 and saw action during the attempts to repulse the Germans after they invaded.

No HE
Some weapons come equipped only with armour-piercing ammunition, and have no high explosive ammunition at all, reducing their effectiveness against infantry and ‘soft’ targets.

Hits from weapons with No HE cannot be allocated to Infantry or Gun teams. If only Infantry and Gun teams
are valid targets, all hits from weapons with No HE are ignored completely as the anti-tank gun has no targets.

Gun teams with No HE are not completely helpless against Infantry teams though as they can shoot as Rifle teams if necessary (see page 117 of the main rulebook).

Hull-mounted Guns
Some tanks mount weapons in the front of the hull instead of in a turret to save weight or to make them easier to produce.

A hull-mounted weapon mounted in the front of a vehicle has a 180-degree Field of Fire covering everything in front of a line drawn across the front of the vehicle.

If the weapon is mounted at the rear of the vehicle, the Field of Fire covers everything to the rear of a line drawn across the rear of the vehicle.
