FlamesCon 2024 Chris' Italian Excursion
With Chris Townley

For many years I’ve wanted to build an Italian Army, ever since playing against a couple of friends and their forces back in the early days of Flames Of War. A few years ago (okay, perhaps something like 10+ years…) I started work on one as part of a Raiding Aces campaign we were playing in the office, but like many of my projects it only made it as far as the first hurdle and was relegated to a pile of shame…

With FlamesCon coming up I thought this might be my opportunity to fix this mistake and knock out the start of an Italian Tank Company. I noodled up a few lists with an eye to painting models that I wanted to paint, along with some options that should make the army at least somewhat competitive on the tabletop.

In the end, I settled on the following list…

This gave me an M14/41 Company (I’ve even painted the 3rd Platoon so I can have a complete company), some artillery support in the form of the Semoventes, a pile of Recon/Spearhead options with the AB41 armoured cars, and of course something to deal with heavier armour, 2 platoons of 2 Lancias with their massive 90mm guns.

How will it go on the tabletop…. Great question! I’ve not played a single game with the army as I only just finished building and painting it last week. Nothing like hitting the first round of a tournament and having to learn how to use a new army!

My intention will be to make the most of Luigi Pascucci and his ability to keep units if the Formation on the table thanks to the improved Last Stand (if he is nearby) and push up a wall of Italian Steel towards an objective, whilst the Lancias and Semoventes lay down suppressing fire. Hopefully the AB41s will keep everyone else honest and protect my objectives.

Moving forward I’ve started pondering a painting expansion plan to add some more units to the collection, most likely some L6/40s (which look awesome), another unit of Semoventes so I can run a full Formation, and then perhaps some infantry and artillery to round it all out!

Let's see how the weekend goes...
