Bagration: Axis-Allies - Hungarian, Romanian and Finish Forces On The Eastern Front

Bagration: Axis Allies Spotlight

Bagration: Axis Allies Spotlight
with Wayne Turner

In 1944 Stalin’s Red army is on the attack. While it throws the Germans out of Byelorussia, it also goes about defeating Germany’s allies; Finland, Romania and Hungary. The Romanians hold off the first Soviet attacks, but a second massive offensive in August 1944 sees them overwhelmed. They surrender and swap sides to fight alongside the Soviets.

Meanwhile, the Finns also fight for their survival as the Soviets attempt to steamroll them out of the war. They fight the Soviets to a standstill and agree a peace, but are forced to turn on the Germans.

Finnish Forces

Infantry Platoon (FI702)
An Infantry Company (Jalkaväkikomppania) is led by a Captain who is a veteran of years of fighting. Finnish divisions have had to be reduced from three to two regiments each of infantry, but they are still balanced units with infantry, light infantry (Jääkäri scouts), machine-guns and mortars.

SMG Platoon (FI703)

SMG Platoon (FI703)
The Finns found the submachine-gun very handy in the close confines of forest combat. As more Suomi and captured Soviet PPSh submachine-guns have become available, whole platoons have been equipped with them.

SMG Platoon (FI703)...

Maxim Machine-gun Platoon (FI704)
Large numbers of Soviet infantry are still the greatest threat to Finnish defences. But the ever reliable Maxim HMG is still at hand to see them off. As long as the Soviets keep coming, it will keep firing.

81mm and 120mm Mortar Platoon (FI705)

81mm and 120mm Mortar Platoon (FI705)
The little Tampella M/35 81mm mortar remains a great support weapon for the infantry. Skilled crews can bring their shells down on the Soviets before they have time to react. The Finnish Tampella 120mm mortars along with those captured from the Soviets provide infantry with heavy firepower. The heavy mortars’ high explosive rounds disrupt Soviet assaults as they advance on Finnish positions.

BT-42 Assault Gun (FI010)
The BT-42 assault gun is now hopelessly obsolete, and has been placed in an independent company. Even so, their crews have bravely set out to face Soviet heavy armour in the Panssari Division counterattack. They took heavy losses and were put into reserve.

Landsverk Anti II Anti-Aircraft Gun (FI160)
The Swedish made Landsverk Anti II self-propelled anti-aircraft guns are very good weapons. Their 40mm Bofors cannon with its high rate of fire make them very useful in keeping roving Soviet aircraft away from Finnish armoured troops.

Assault Gun Battery (Plastic) (HUAB01)

Assault Gun Battery (Plastic) (HUAB01)
While the Hungarians may have been behind the Germans in military technology, they were not slow to recognise a good idea when they saw it. In 1943 they went about creating their own assault gun forces to support their infantry divisions based on the German assault gun battalions.

Zrinyi Assault Gun Platoon (HBX03)
After their experience against the Soviets on the Eastern Front, the Hungarian military leaders requested a self-propelled assault gun to aid in their efforts against the hordes of Soviet armour. Based on the hull of the Turán tank, the Zrínyi II mounted a 105mm 43M howitzer. Plans for the proposed Zrínyi I mounting a German 75mm gun were cut short when the Americans bombed the factory. Only one prototype was built.

7/31 Machine-gun Platoons (HU704)
The Hungarians use the same machine-gun they used during the Great War, the Schwarzlose 7/31M. The 7/31M has a water-cooled jacket which allows it to sustain a high rate-of-fire over a long period of time, making it an ideal support weapon in defensive situations.

The 1st Armoured Division’s Turán I and II tanks first entered combat on the Transylvanian frontier in September 1944. The Turáns of the 2nd Armoured Division had seen combat in Ukraine from May 1944.

Toldi Light Tank (HU010)
The Toldi II tank is armed with a 20mm antitank rifle, but in 1944 units began to receive new 40mm armed Toldi IIa tanks with more hitting power and better armour.

The Swedish designed Landsverk Anti-II self-propelled anti-aircraft guns were made under license in Hungary as the Nimród. The Hungarians had well and truly field tested them in 1942 and the crews were well versed in the use of this anti-aircraft weapon against Soviet ground attack aircraft.

Romanian Forces

Rifle Platoon (RO702)
The elite motorised infantry’s role is to hold the positions taken by the tanks, as well as rapidly moving to support them. They ferret out the Soviet anti-tank guns and deal with them before they can knock out the Romanian tanks. Highly motivated they will attack on the move, almost before their trucks have even stopped.

Mix and Match Armour – The Finnish T-26 Armoured Company

Mix and Match Armour – The Finnish T-26 Armoured Company
Finland did not really have much in the way of domestic tank production in World War II. Instead they relied on a mismatched series of tanks captured from the Soviets during the Winter War, older pre-war models they already possessed or whatever they could get from their German “allies”. In a few cases, the Germans handed over captured soviet T-34s to bolster the Finn’s ranks for armoured vehicles. The results created armoured companies that were very eclectic in nature with a few containing modern German and captured Soviet vehicles such as Panzer IVs and T-34/85s. However, the majority had platoons of the outdated T-26 light tank.

Hungarian Heavies
One of the most exciting novelties of the new book Bagration: Axis Allies undoubtedly concerns the Hungarians. They are in fact the only ones among the minor Axis powers who are able to field two of the most iconic tanks of the Second World War. We are talking of course the Tiger and the Panther.
