Blood, Guts, & Glory

Blood, Guts, & Glory Painting Challenge:
The German Forces

To celebrate the release of Blood, Guts, & Glory the members of the Battlefront Studio decided to hold a 24-hour painting challenge themed around the forces available in the new book. However, some people decided to take advantage of this opportunity to either complete other painting projects that had been haunting them for some time or to get ahead start for future projects Battlefront had planned.

In this series of articles we share with you the experiences that took place during these 24-hours.

Phil Yates
FHH Panzersturmkompanie from Blood, Guts, & Glory
I've decided it's time to start a FHH Panzersturmkompanie from Blood, Guts, and Glory. The Panzer Brigades have fascinated me for a long time, so I am as keen to build one as I was to work on that part of the book.

I love the unique organisations of the Panzer brigades and the idea of Reluctant Trained armoured infantry with masses of support is an interesting challenge.

I don't expect to get the whole force done in a day, but I'd like to make a good start by getting the tank-hunters done and an assault platoon well under way. Oh, and I've got to assemble the Stuka zu Fuss as Mike challenged me to do them too.

I'm looking forward to the event, and have worked through the night on far too many occasions, but I know it will get hard as day breaks and sleep seems really desirable. Hopefully everyone else's enthusiasm will carry me through that hump! Meanwhile, I plan to make sure I remember to eat regular meals through the night to keep my energy up!

Mike Haycock
Panzerjägerkompanie from Grey Wolf
I’m a slow painter so I am still painting my new Hetzer Company from Grey Wolf (page 144) so unfortunately am not doing an army out of Blood, Guts, & Glory. So I used the painting challenge as a way to get the non-Hetzer part of my army painted.

I am hoping to get this painted. I have not done anything like this before and as a slow painter was not sure how things would go.

James Brown
Special Project X
As usual, I’ve decided to try something a bit different for this challenge. I’m quite interested in winter camouflage in general, and specifically I  like the look of streaky, faded whitewash over soft-edged German three-colour camouflage. It would seem that the only way of achieving the look is to fully paint the camouflage pattern, then paint a translucent layer of white over the top. I tried this a few years ago for a Wargames Illustrated hobby article. I liked the effect then, but thought it could be improved. I liked the way the camouflage colours were faintly visible, but the white itself (which I applied with an airbrush) was quite flat, lacking depth.

So I want to try a different approach, starting with a whitened base coat, then painting streaks, chips and scratches to give the illusion of a faded and rain-streaked coat of whitewash. I’ve mixed up a small batch of Panther Yellow (FWP365) with white for a base colour. And I’ve also mixed whitened camouflage colours, which I’ll apply with my airbrush.

I hope to get 8 of the new Panzer IV J tanks finished. That doesn’t sound like much, compared with some of the other guys’ more ambitious targets, but I’m still not sure I’ll be able to finish. 3 hours per tank is probably plenty, but there may be more fiddling around required than I expect, to make the slightly unusual paint scheme look decent. If things go faster than I expect, I have two more tanks in reserve. Who knows, maybe I’ll make it to ten.

I’m anticipating an easier experience than last time. We’re starting earlier in the day, so the early-afternoon delirium on the second day won’t be a problem. And there will be fewer distractions, without a busy tournament atmosphere to contend with.

FHH Panzersturmkompanie from Blood, Guts, & Glory
I missed out on the last 24 hour painting challenge, so I was eager to hit this one with raw ambition and boundless enthusiasm. To that end I chose a FHH Panzersturmkompanie! I was pretty excited about how much you can pack into 1500 points.

I realised that there was a lot in the force, and I already had the infantry finished and ready to go. So for this challenge I’m going to focus entirely on the Sd Kfz 251 vehicles and all their variants. With a mere 24 half-tracks to do in all, I should have no problems. I mean that’s only one half-track an hour, right? No worries.
