Briscon 2021 Report - World War III: Team Yankee With Garry Wait After last year’s annual Briscon tournament was cancelled due to COVID 19, the relaxing of restrictions due to COVID 19 being well under control in Australia saw us able to run a full event again. This year we decided to up the points to 120pts but a maximum of two formations.  This worked very well in practice with most games completed in the 2.5 hours allocated, although we allowed 2.75 hours for the first round of the five over two days. I was organiser for this event but the draw and running of the event was taken up by Duane McAndrew who is a legend in the Flames community in Queensland for his tireless efforts at promoting the hobby. As part of the event, I decided that in thankfulness for being able to run an event again,  we would make a contribution to charity with the outcome of the tournament.  With our national remembrance day, ANZAC Day  – shared with our brethren in New Zealand – coming up, I thought it only right to make a donation to Soldier On, a charity that supports those service personnel who have experienced difficulties in their service to country. To that end we not only trophies and prizes of various sizes for EACH and every player but also had a great raffle with donations from Dice of War, Warriors Lodge, Aetherworks, Battlefront (signed books!) and many others.

This raffle saw total donations and raffle tickets of $830 towards this excellent charity, thanks to everyone who helped out. Most excited of all was Matt Yakimoff winning the prize we all wanted!

For this weekend, we used the new April 2021 Extended Missions Matrix in the download and found the new missions absolutely fantastic. Everyone had a great time and we were lucky to have attendees from afar as Victoria (a two hour flight) and Gympie (three hours drive).

As Duane was running the day to day admin of the event, it finally gave me the chance to play, which I was most grateful for. I posted a list weeks in advance online so everyone knew what I was running and we had a random draw for first round then modified swiss chess (highest plays highest) each round.  The weekend was played in a great atmosphere of laughter and fun and it’s a credit to all players that everyone was glad to be back and gaming without masks or restrictions. As an indication for how friendly and close the sports scores were, most players received peer votes with two players on equal levels and we had to have a coin toss to see who was the winner of the Best and Fairest award. This went to Dylan O’Brien who also won a signed WWIII Soviet book from the raffle, well done that man:

Honourable mention goes to Steven Fleming who tied and was given an extra prize for his friendly and relaxed sporting manner at the games table.  Something that could be said of all our players, actually.

Best painted was strongly won by Adam Trapski, who flew in from Melbourne to play for the weekend.  Adam is a great sport also and had a stunning Free Kuwaiti Army, complete with a flight of Skyhawks.  This too was a strongly contested prize with other players highly regarded.

Third place went to William Warne-Jones with British Mech + British Airborne Second place went to Scott McCorley with French Armour and French Mechanised (AMX10P)  First place went to Garry Wait with French VAB and Israeli Merkava II Allied

Total Results, we used formations broken just in case we needed a tie breaker but this didn’t eventuate and it encouraged aggressive play on the table  :
