Armies Of Late War: Chris' Soviet Infantry and German Cats

Armies Of Late War: Chris' Soviet Infantry and German Cats
with Chris Townley

Like many of the guys in the Studio the release of Armies Of Late War has given me a reason to start looking through some of the models that were otherwise taking a holiday whilst I worked on Mid War or Team Yankee armies.

These days I am feeling very time poor with two energetic and demanding kids so rather than having to try and convert lists from one of my V3 books, then figuring out the changes with the Special Rules book and so on I can just take either the Armies Of Late War book or cards and just quickly build an army. I’d rather be playing than trying to remember my first year accounting paper…

So with that in mind I have a couple of lists that I am keen to run. The first of which is my Soviet infantry that I took to FlamesCon last year and Panzerschreck earlier this year (although in that outing they were an Early War force).

So what’s different between my two lists? Firstly I’ve built this as a 1500 point force and FlamesCon was 1625 so I’ve had to make some sacrifices to hit the lower point level. I’ve dropped my 152mm howitzer battery but included a 76mm regimental gun battery in its place. This saves me a pile of points and adds another unit to my formation, helping to keep me on the table. I’ve lost the option of including some HQ attachments (Pioneers and AT Rifles) but I can now include the ATR’s as an integral part of the company so no great loss there.

So this is my starting point, based on my performance at FlamesCon last year the army definitely needs some tweaks to make it a little more useful but it will be nice to play a few games with it and see how I go.

My second list that I am keen to play around with is based on my two big cat armies - the Panzer Ausbildungs Abteilung 500 force from Desperate Measures and the Jagdtigers of 512. Schwere Panzerjagerkompanie. Now I won’t have all the cheap tanks that these lists normally come with so the force will look a bit smaller, but I’ll actually get around to putting it on the table!

This list doesn’t translate quite as well my Soviet infantry, but I can still run the original lists out of Desperate Measures and Bridge At Remagen if I want to spend the time converting them over. I’m thinking that this Tiger formation is looking pretty fragile with a couple of small platoons so it will probably be just for fun games.

Needless to say but you run short of points quickly if you want to run Tigers, Königstigers and Jagdtigers in one army!

You can find some more information about the origins of this army here:

Panzer Ausbildungs Abteilung 500...
512. Schwere Panzerjagerkompanie...

I have plenty of other armies that I’ve started but never finished (Comets I’m looking at you!) that I’m now taking a second look at thanks to Armies Of Late War. I just need to finish painting some new units for my Team Yankee US force and I can dive back into something ‘new’ for Flames Of War!
