Brown Shirts, Thick Skins and Big Balls
PzIV/70’s in your Flames Of War game
Now if Wayne had been a real friend he would have given my Feldherrnhale Division Panzerkampgruppe some really cool special rules (He did for the Panzergrenadiers after all). But he told me the Panzer IV/70 was enough of an advantage. Phht what does he know.
Let’s see, you get 8 of them for 1200 points. That is front armour 9 and Anti tank of 14…he may have a point.
Of course the downside is side armour of only 3 and overloaded (go figure, have you seen the gun on that sucker) and not to forget slow tank that is 20cm move not 30cm as per most other tanks.
But, AT 14, Front 9, that even makes IS2’s wobble, not to mention twice their rate of fire.
So what’s the trick with them? What I have found so far is that don’t let people get around your side. Even a miserable Stuart will hurt you there. I found that the side of the wargames table is definitely good at holding a flank secure.
They are also slow, so mass them together in a good big group and they can take any objective.
Also remember with a movement of 8"/20cm plus a ‘Stormtrooper’ of 4"/10cm makes for a total of 12"/30cm movement, which is what everyone else moves anyway.
So my basic plan for the free for all mission is mass the Pz IV/70’s on one flank and drive to the objective and take it. The rest of the points are to hold my other objective and also hopefully provide some anti air cover. (Aircraft are the bane of all German Panzer forces)
So here we go! This is the attack force for my army:
Panzerkampfgruppe HQ
2x Panzer IV/70 (V)
300 points
1st Panzer Platoon
3x Panzer IV/70 (V) |
450 points
2nd Panzer Platooon
3x Panzer IV/70 (V)
450 points
Panzer Anti-aircraft Gun Platoon
3 x Sdkfz 7/1 (Quad 2cm) (Upgarde to armoured)
165 points
1365 points
This is the defence side of my force:
Panzerpionier Platoon
with 2 Pioneer squads and Pioneer supply truck |
160 points
Motorised Artillery Battery
4x 10.5cm leFH18 howitzers, Observer in Sd Kfz 250 half-track |
225 points
Total |
1750 points
The infantry can dig in as well as drop a minefield in front of them or the Artillery.
This combination “should” hold an objective long enough for the Pz IVL/70’s to punch a hole to your opponent's objective.
Either way it’s a fast, furious and fun game. Just don’t forget to roll them stormtrooper moves.
