Andrew's Hobby League

For the hobby league I am recreating one of my favourite Flames of War armies I used to run over 12 years ago, the US Assault Company. I am painting them up the be the 29th infantry division so I will be putting the blue and the grey patches on all my troops. To support these troops I will be also running a small formation of M10s. Looking forward to painting this army up and playing some beach landing games.

I love Hobby Nights, a night of sitting around a painting-table with friends and just shooting the breeze, talking painting techniques, and just being social. For every player the reasons for playing the games we do varies, for me it’s about community, and
Flames Of War has one of the best communities out there. I remember when I started war gaming around 16 years ago, it was the Flames Of War community that got me into gaming through hobby nights at our local game store. I learned almost all my painting techniques I know now thanks my gaming club ‘Da Mommas Boyz’. It was a great experience getting back to those days has been fun and I am enjoying sharing that experience with other players just getting into the game, and showing them the tricks and techniques passed down to me.

Week two has me finishing up my rebasing and starting on my repainting project on my old 29th troops. As you can see I still have some sand from my old bases on these but I will be scraping that off and adding Vallejo Texture paint, Desert Sand to create the beach feel I want for the bases. With less than a few weeks left I am feeling good about getting my first 50 points painted.

This week I have been swamped with work, but I was still able to finish my first fully painted unit of assault  troops. Not that I left myself much to do, as I basically just had to finish the basing and paint the helmets. Now that I have a system down for painting and basing the rest of my troops it should be relatively quick. With each stand I finish I feel that I am getting slightly better at painting the patches and helmets, the Blue and Grey just wouldn’t look right without them.

This week I focussed on my troops, having finished one of the 4 units last week I had a pretty good routine set up for doing the rest and was able to breeze through them. I still have a few detail things I would like to add to them down the line, but I am happy with how they turned out. Hard to believe that all these troops are only 38 points! 12 more points to go! I do have my Naval Gun support Command Card that can eat up the last points for next week’s 50 point games, but I am hoping to get my M12 155mm Artillery Battery finished in time.

This week I got several games in for the Launch of the D-Day: German book. I played a game against Ashleigh’s British tanks, and another vs Luke’s Panzer IVs! There sure were a lot of tanks for my infantry to deal with but man did they shine, I was able to hold off Ashleigh’s tanks for some time using my 155 Artillery and they ended up winning me the game. Against Luke I ended up having a Bazooka take out his command tanks. Both games were crazy fun and I really got a good feel on how the 29th Assault company works in D-Day: American.
