In the years leading up to World War Two, trials were held for the pre-production versions of the Sturmgeschütz. Following these trials, it was concluded that they were to be supported by an armoured ammunition carrier and observation vehicle. This was the Sd Kfz 253.

The design was based on a Demag semi-tracked chassis and was initially introduced as an observation and command vehicle for the Sturmgeschütz brigades but it soon became widely used by other branches of the German artillery for observation duties.

The appearance was similar to the Sd Kfz 250, but the Sd Kfz 253 variant was fully enclosed. Demag/Wegman manufactured 285 vehicles during 1940-1941 before it was decided that a normal Sd Kfz 250 was just as well suited to the same role.

The Sd Kfz 253 saw service with the 640, 659, 660 and 665 Sturmgeschütz Batteries in France 1940. More saw service in Russia with Sturmgeschütz units.
