Rivers!

Modelling your Battlefield in a Box Rivers

When the Battlefront team first started talking to the guys at GF9 about the Battlefield in a Box series, we wanted people to be able to buy the box and put it straight on the table, ready to go. Most of us have trouble getting our armies fully painted without spending weekends mucking about with MDF, putty and resin, trying to make our own buildings or rivers and then having to paint them.

The team at GF9 came back to us with some river sections that we absolutely loved. The difficult part was to work out which of Jason’s samples we would not put in the box. The GF9 team was then set to the task of trying to find a product that would be “bendy” without being “floppy”. We wanted the rivers to contour to any little bumps in tables as well as being resilient enough so that you can transport them easily (as well drop them without breaking) whilst being hard wearing and resistant to paint chipping. Basically, we were trying to solve all the issues we had with normal hard resin rivers that we had all encountered in the past. Bendy River

Our next challenge was to work out what sort of flock we would supply. The difficulty being that we don’t know how you have flocked your tables and terrain. This left us with three options:

• Pick a neutral flock colour from the GF9 range and have the rivers pre-flocked, or

• Include a selection of GF9 colours for you to choose, or

• Include an extra river section and let you use your own flock!

More is more, as far as we were concerned, so we thought most people would be happy to use their own flock, or even just use them as they are.

Of course, we also wanted to show you just how nice they would look if you did choose to do a little extra work, so we asked James to grab some of the GF9 Basing Kits and show you what can be achieved with a little work. Here are some before-and-after photographs of a few river sections James modelled.

James took the opportunity to use some of the Liquid Mask (523) from the Utility Set to mask around the 'ford'. This allowed him to do some additional drybrushing to make this part come to life.

We chose to use the following items from the GF9 range to help us give some complementary colours:

Arid Static Grass
Ash Waste
Green Static Grass
Parched Straw Static Grass
Summer Clump Foliage
Winter/Dead Static Grass
