The German army’s need for a new 10.5cm artillery piece led to the development of the leFH18 by the Rheinmetall. The first prototypes were ready in 1935.

Though a reasonably modern design is was still very heavy and all but impossible for the crew to move quickly, and even then not without the aid of a tractor or limber team.

The projectile was separated from the load. The crew could select from six different loads according to the range they wanted.

During the early campaigns in Russia the gun was pressed into action as an anti-tank weapon on occasion to deal with the appearance of the T-34, KV-1 and KV-2.
