Wittmann's Wild Ride

Wittmann's Wild Ride
Returning to Normandy for the release of Overlord and Atlantik Wall gives us an opportunity to dust off old armies and replay some of the most memorable battles of World War Two. Over the next six weeks we are going to share some of our favourite scenarios, rules and articles.

This week we take a wild ride with the famed German Tiger Ace Michael Wittmann.

Missions & Scenarios

Wittmann's Wild Ride
Wittmann’s Wild Ride recreates the epic attack by Obersturmführer Michael Wittmann and his lone Tiger tank against A Company of the 1st Battalion, The Rifle Brigade on the road from Villers-Bocage to Point 213.

With its commanding views of the surrounding terrain, the high ground is critical. By taking Point 213 you will be able to observe the ground all around, thereby dominating the road all the way to Caen.

The Battle For Villers-Bocage
Villers-Bocage sits upon a major road hub. This road hub contains one of the only north-south roads in the area, while the east-west roads lead directly to Caen in one direction and Avranches in the other. This road structure is critical to supplying the German troops engaged with the British.

Panzer Divisions in Normandy Panzer Divisions in Normandy
Key to Hitler’s strategy of pushing the “little fish back into the pond” was the ability of the Panzer divisions to halt the Allied offensive at the beachhead. However, because of the Fuhrer’s own belief that a larger invasion was imminent at Pas de Calais, several key Panzer divisions were held from the Normandy campaign until it was too late while Generalfeldmarschall Rommel had to make do with only four divisions under his command.

Hill 112:
Axis Of Attack
Hill 112 could be seen on the skyline from the Allied lodgement area in Normandy and although the gentle slopes of the hill were not a dominating feature, the fields of fire and observation potential from the summit were invaluable for both sides artillery. Indeed it was remarked that: “He who holds Hill 112, holds Normandy.”

History of the 11th Armoured Division
11th Armoured Division was widely recognized as one of the best British armoured divisions in the second world war, earning its spurs in all of the most famous actions of the North West European campaign. Commanded by the desert legend Pip Roberts and incorporating the mighty 3rd Royal Tank Regiment, 11th Armoured was a flashing rapier that cut into the heart of German defences in many battles including Goodwood, Epsom, Market Garden, The Battle of the Bulge and many more.

Operation Epsom
Despite all the fears of the Allied commanders and some initial setbacks, overall the D-Day assault on Fortress Europe had been a great success. With their overwhelming air and naval superiority, as each day passed it became increasingly unlikely that the growing numbers of American, British and Canadian troops could be dislodged from the beachhead and thrown back into the sea.
