The first design used a Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun on a Crusader III chassis, but this design was ultimately not adopted for this role.

The Crusader III A.A. Mk II was an improved design with an enclosed turret and twin 20mm Oerlikon cannons capable of firing explosive, incendiary or practice rounds at up to 450 rounds per minute. However the space for the crew was limited.

Crusader AA The Crusader III A.A. Mk III was the final version.

Mk III only differed from the Mk II by the position of the radio, which was moved to the hull in order to free some space inside the turret. Crusader AA II and III vehicles were used in front line duties with British and Polish armoured units after D-Day. Due to Allied air superiority they had had little opportunity to fire at their intended targets.
