Wespe (GE141) Built for issue to the self-propelled artillery units of the Panzer Divisions, the Wespe proved both versatile and effective. It made excellent use of the otherwise obsolete Panzer II chassis in carrying the powerful 10.5cm howitzer forward to keep up with the mobility of the Panzers.

Over 600 were made based on the Panzer II chassis, which stayed in production late in the war to fulfill demand. The initial Wespe units had their first major engagement at Kursk and performed well in the initial phases suppressing the defending Russian troops as the Panzers rolled forward.

In Flames Of War an investment of 495 points for a full battery of Wespes and support is a heavy commitment and not one to be made without a solid plan. Most games involving a battery of Wespes will be 2000 points or larger. In these games, Wespe batteries with their long reach and mobile observation teams really come into their own. Use them to create holes in your opponents anti-tank defenses before rushing forwards with your tanks under cover of smoke.

Don’t forget air defenses, Wespes tend to be primary targets for prowling air support! Wespes were issued in mid 1943 and arrived at the front in their nice new Dunkelgelb (sand/dark yellow).
