Road to Mid War GT
This week Ken takes a look at the army he will be taking to the New Zealand Mid War Grand Tournament.
II. Kompanie, 200 Regiment, 90. Leichte Division.
I have resurrected the first Flames of War army I ever made, the II. Kompanie, 200 Regiment, 90. Leichte Division of Das Afrika Korps. I have always enjoyed this list and bringing it back brings a warm fuzzy to my heart. (Us old guys can use all the warm fuzzies we can get).
This is an anti-tank infantry company designed to hold a position against advancing enemy armour. (Just like the real 90th light). It has a few twists in it because it uses the original artillery from the 190. Artillerie Regiment (7.62 cm Fk36(r) guns just like the original). It also is reinforced with pioneers from the 850. Sturm Battalion.
|
|
The original 90th Light was used primarily to anchor a point for the 15th and 21st Panzers to attack from. It was the German contingent of the 20th Motorized Corps usually working with the Italian Ariete Division supporting the armoured divisions in their attacks or forming the rear guard, if the armour was forced to retreat.
|
As the only German division formed outside of Germany, the 90th light sports a number of other fun characteristics as well. Though my initial list is straight forward, it can be substituted with Diana tank-hunters, Stug D assault guns, Bison infantry guns, or 8.8cm FlaK36 heavy anti-aircraft guns with very little adjustment to the original list and without violating the 90th Light’s historical order of battle.
|
I used a 1750-point version in my last
tournament and didn’t fair to badly (4-3, 2-5, 1-6, 5-2, 6-1) except
when trying to attack a large horde of Soviet infantry, the 1-6, or
failing every platoon morale check, the 2-5. |
But even in those games
(since I’m infantry as well) I have a 50-50 chance of being able to
defend which helps me against those type companies. I also added the
HMG and mortars for the GT to give me a little more anti-infantry
capability. |
|
|
I may still tweak it a little with some of
the other options but probably nothing more than swapping out the
infantry guns for Grilles or Stug D. Have to keep you guessing a little
bit.
See you in June.
