Assembling The Grenadier Company I Assembling The Grenadier Company I:
The Mid-war Grenadierkompanie

with Blake Coster

A Grenadierkompanie is the finest infantry force you can command. The troops are all experienced veterans and they are backed by the best weapons that the German army can provide, from StuG assault guns to the feared Tiger; your Grenadierkompanie will never be out-gunned or out-classed. These elite troops are now the latest additions to the Flames Of War plastic miniatures range.

In this two-part series of articles, I'll demonstrate how to assemble the contents of the new plastic Grenadier Company for both Mid-war and Late-war. So let's break out the hobby tools and plastic cement and get started assembling the Mid-war version of the Grenadier Company!

Learn how assemble the Grenadier Company for Late-war here...

But before we begin any assembly, let's ensure the contents of the Grenadier Company box set are all present and correct. If you have any problems or issues with the contents of your box set, please feel free to contact our Customer Service team at: [email protected].

Assembling A Mid-war Grenadier Company
What Is A Mid-war Grenadier Company?
A Grenadier Company in Mid-war contains a Company HQ made up of a Company Command SMG team and a 2iC Command SMG team and the compulsory Grenadier Platoons: two platoons, each containing an HQ Section and up to three Grenadier Squads. The rest of the force is made up of whatever Weapons and Support platoons are available in the company organisation diagram. For the purpose of this article, I’ll be using the Grenaderkompanie (Tunisia & Italy) as found on page 72 of North Africa.

Assembling The Company HQ
Highlighted to the right and below are the figure options required to assemble the Company Command SMG team and 2iC Command SMG team. I've kept with the same colour coding as seen on the back of the box: the officers highlighted in red; the NCOs highlighted in white; the Radioman highlighted in orange; the Riflemen highlighted in blue and the optional Panzerknacker figure highlighted in yellow.

Below: The highlighted figures on the Infantry sprue.

Assembling The Grenadier Company I
To represent the Company Command SMG team correctly assemble one Officer figure, the Radioman figure and one NCO figure on one of the small three-holes bases provided in the box set. The 2iC Command SMG team is made up of one Officer figure, one NCO figure and a one Riflemen figure, again modelled on a small three-hole base.

In Mid-war, you can upgrade either or both Command SMG teams to Command Panzerknacker SMG for +5 per team. For the Company Command team, simply replace the NCO figure with the Panzerknacker figure. For the 2iC Command team, simply replace the Rifleman figure with the Panzerknacker figure. Upgrading your Command teams to include a Panzerknacker will give your Company HQ more punch when assaulting with enemy tanks.

The Colour-Coded Company HQ Organisation Diagram
In the Company HQ organisation diagram below I've taken the opportunity to do a little virtual modelling, if you will, by taking the colour-coded image above a step further and arranged the figures types correctly for each Command team minus the Panzerknacker upgrade.

Highlighted to the left and below are the figure options required to assemble the Grenadier Platoons. As before, I've kept with the same colour coding as seen on the back of the box: the officers highlighted in red; the NCOs highlighted in white; the Radioman highlighted in orange; the Riflemen highlighted in blue; the MG gunners and loaders in black and the optional Panzerknacker figure (an optional upgrade in the HQ Section) highlighted in yellow.

Assembling The Grenadier Company I
A Mid-war Grenadier Platoon is made up of an HQ Section containing a Command Rifle / MG team and either two or three Grenadier Squads depending on which option you decide to field. Each of these Grenadier Squads contain two Rifle / MG teams.

To model the Command Rifle / MG team, arrange one Officer figure, one NCO figure and one Rifleman figure on a small three-hole base. Like in the Company HQ, the Command Rifle / MG can be upgraded to Command Panzerknacker SMG team for +5 points. To do this, simply replace the Rifleman figure with a Panzerknacker figure.

To correctly represent a Grenadier Squad in Mid-war, the first Rifle / MG team needs to contain one NCO figure; a two-man MG team made up of one Gunner and one Loader figure; and two Riflemen figures. The second Rifle / MG team contains five Riflemen figures. Rifle / MG teams are modelled on the Medium five-hole bases provided in the box set.

The Colour-Coded Grenadier Platoons Organisation Diagram
In the Grenadier Platoon organisation diagram below I've taken the opportunity to do some more virtual modelling and have arranged the figures to correctly represent the both compulsory Grenadiers Platoons that need to be fielded as part of a Grenadierkompanie in Flames Of War.

The Command Rifle / MG team is once more minus the Panzerknacker upgrade and I've used the extra machine-gun Loader figures to represent some more Riflemen.

I hope you find this assembly guide useful when it comes time to assemble your own Mid-war Grenadier Company. Be sure to join me again next to when we assemble the Late-war version.

Till then, happy modelling!
