UK Office Starts their Hobby League

UK Office Starts their Hobby League
With Chris Potter

All it took was a simple email around the office: ‘Interested in starting a Flames of War Hobby League and wondered if you would like to come play some games and paint some models up. Come by my desk at lunchtime and we can get sorted’

I didn’t believe in viral events until 11 players turned up at lunch and wanted to know more of this Hobby League shenanigans. This was more than the Hobby sheet allowed us to have, so I quickly became GM and organiser, and the Office Manager Matt Sulley, decided he would guide the 10 new players through their Late War Journey from the side lines, whilst still painting up both a German and a US Para armies. With the exception of Gareth, all of the team had never painted up their respective army choice before, with 3 completely new players who had never played a game of Flames of War.

Quickly we organised everyone into their preferred allegiances with a fairly even split: 5 German Players and 7 Allied players wanting to start new armies. I think the promise of a free Army Deal from our Late War release helped. So that first lunchtime evolved into an Army List planning session as you can see from the pictures below! We first covered off 50points, which were not only easy to assemble and paint, but was a well rounded force to get onto the tabletop for a few introductory games.

Then the players went wild with their support choices and the session turned into who could get the biggest guns into their army. A fine session and everyone went away highly motivated to get sticking and painting for the next meet up.

The second meeting was a purely assembling party, and every player came away with their 50pt force put together and awaiting the mechanic’s workshop for painting. One player, Xander, managed over the weekend to paint his first 50points! Steam rolling ahead of the competition, he has earned his first prize from the Hobby League kit and left everyone else frothing at the mouth to catch up.

The next few sessions will focus on getting everyone a game or two in place over lunchtimes with the new players learning the rules, the players from V3 converting over and using the unit cards and the new points system and the players who think they know it all testing their tactics theories against each other, whilst helping the new players to learn the game.

Stay tuned for our armies as we progress and see who will paint up 75points first before we reach the 100point mark and hold our big Euro Style tournament. And who gets the spot prize of most over pointed big gun? Who gets the prize for first tank kill? And who will reign supreme for the title of Master FOW player in the UK Office?

I'm Freddie, and I'm part of Battlefront at Nottingham, UK. This Hobby League challenge is quite a journey for me, as in all my years wargaming, I've never played US forces before. My approach to gaming is very thematic; I'll collect units purely for their impression. As a child, I watched films like Kelly's Heroes and Bridge at Remagen with my Father. There's a scene in Remagen where the column is ambushed from a bend in the road by a farmhouse. So with the US Army deal I decided to replay this in my beloved 15mm. For my 1st 50 points, I decided to build just the tank element, as this would enable me to get a force quickly assembled. I needed something to take on the Soviet and German players, who would no doubt be bringing Big Cats and KV's to the table. My HQ consists of two M4 75mm Shermans for 7 points. These are backed up by a Veteran platoon of four Sherman 76s. All I need to do now, is get them painted and on the table. I'm already thinking of my next additions, but that's for after the first couple of games.
