Operations Totalize and Tractable Scenarios
Scenario 1: Route Nationale No. 158 (Operation Totalize, 8-9 August)

By Stuart Elle

The preparatory bombardment by artillery and medium bombers has just finished. The Canadians are suffering some command and control problems because some bombers have mistakenly attacked the command and artillery headquarters of the rear areas. Defensible positions for the Germans are limited to the villages, quarry and wooded areas scattered across the rolling, open farm lands. While the rest of the division advances to their intermediate objectives, elements of the 10th Infantry Brigade and 29th Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment are tasked with clearing several villages defended by elements of 89. Infanterie-Division along RN No.158.

This mission uses the Ambush and Prepared Positions special rules.

Your Orders

Canadian Forces
You must secure the villages of Cintheaux and Hautmesnil that lie on the left flank of the Division’s advance. You will also need to clear the quarry outside Hautmesnil since it provides a perfect spot to hide troops.

German Forces
You must hold your ground against the tanks and infantry that will attempt to follow up the penetration of your lines during the previous night.

Preparing for battle
1. Set up the table as shown in Map above. The table is 4’/120cm by 4’/120cm. Place the objectives as indicated in the villages and quarry.
2. German artillery is deployed off table using the Across the Volga special rule.
3. The German player deploys their forces as indicated on the map. The player may nominate one platoon within each deployment area to be held in Ambush.
4. The Canadian player deploys their forces within 6”/15cm of the table edge, and not within 8”/20cm of a visible enemy team.
5. Both players now place their Independent teams in their areas starting with the Canadian player. The German player must place the Company Command team in Red “C” deployment zone.

Beginning the Battle
1. The Germans begin the game in prepared positions, so their troops are in Foxholes and Gone to Ground.
2. The Canadian take the first turn.

Ending the Battle
The Battle ends when either:
1. The Canadian hold all of the objectives at the start of their turn, or
2. The start of the German player’s eighth turn.

Deciding who won
The Canadians win if the game ended with all three objectives under their control.

The battle is a draw if the Canadians control the two out of three objectives.

Otherwise the Germans win and the Canadians must regroup to make another assault before continuing the advance.

Scenario 2: Scenario 2: Point 195 (Operation Totalize, 10 August)...

Scenario 3: Assault on Epancy (Operation Tractable, 15 August)...
