As the Allies closed in on the Rhine in March 1945, Germany forces begun destroying all the bridges across the river. By a stroke of luck, American forces were able to capture the intact rail bridge at Remagen. Quickly taking advantage of their good fortune, the Allies established a bridgehead on the Germany side of the river; giving them a much need psychological boost and a foothold into Germany.
