Completed M6 37mm GMC Making an M6 37mm GMC

A while back I started a force based on Old Ironsides in the run up to Kasserine. Part of this force was comprised of the new M3 105 Howitzer designated the T-19.

This unit has the option of an anti-tank detachment comprising the stop gap self-propelled anti-tank M6 37mm GMC.

Essentially the M6 comprised a 3/4-ton Dodge truck combined with an M3 37mm anti-tank gun. Painfully unprotected and under powered it served with numerious units. It’s one of those must haves for my army to create the correct feel to it.

So how do you make one? Simple…

Completed and ready for painting

You’ll need 3 x US412 and 3 x US500 and a “Bic” biro pen or some plastic rod about 3mm in diameter, some thin card (a business card will do) and all your usual modelling equipment.

Build your US412 Dodge ¾-ton Trucks, but cut down the side panels and glue them in the central position on either side.

Step 2

If your using a biro pen unscrew your old biro remove the ink part. Using a pair of pliers remove the ball point and then the plastic insert.  It’s this insert that is exacty the right size for your gun mount. If using plasitic rod cut a length to 8.5mm in length.

Superglue this to the center of the Dodge rear deck. Then glue your gun on top.

Step 3

Now for the armoured shield. Here we need a template and some thin plastic or card.

Cut out your template.

Carefully superglue the left and right armour plates down the centre. Once dry bend slightly and glue the triangle on top.

(Don’t forget to cut out the hole through which the gun will eventually go).

Step 4

Once you have all 3 sides assembled slide them over the end of the gun (without glue) to test fit and see how they look.

Once you’re happy glue it into place.

Paint them and they’re ready to go.

Of course you could add a few extra details and crew to complete the package.

Have fun!
