Basing With Urban Rural Bases

Using Plastic Rural and Rubble Bases
with Derek Forrester
Figures painted by Josh Forrester

The Battlefront plastic bases are well-detailed moulds with a good variety of urban and rural type options. These vary from cobblestones with rubble, to rural type bases with fences and trees and other points of interest. You can easily add some extra details to include timber building materials, like planks and debris. These effects can be easily made from plastic card and the rubble can be made from a variety of other standard hobby stuff you have lying around in your hobby lair. Here, I’ve done up a few scenic bases for a variety of theatres using the new FJ sculpts for both Mid and Late War.

Western Front Urban Base
I started off with a black primer over this base, after adding some extra detailing of blown up building materials and debris etc.

The base was then dry brushed with Vallejo German Grey. Some cobblestones were picked out and painted with cobblestone type colors including Vallejo London Grey, Ivory, and shades of grey. Terracotta colors were used to simulate worn brick fragments and rubble, which helped to lift the base overall.

Wooden areas were painted with Vallejo dark sand and then thinned down brown oil wash which was applied a few times. A thinned acrylic wash of beige brown to finish off with a little highlighting suited my take on wood effects.

A dark wash was then applied over the base and tied everything back in together.

I added the figures after the majority of the basing was done and applied a sandy mix which was an off the shelf product and repainted those small areas.

Finally, a few grass tufts were placed, I felt that less was more here just to lift the base and add some details to break up the basing.

Western Front Rural Base
This base was primed with a flat black after adding the fence and tree. I didn’t see the need to add too much extra detail here. I added some leaf flakes on the fence to simulate lichen, applied with some superglue and excess removed.

The base was then painted with Vallejo Chocolate Brown and a heavy dry brush of Vallejo Iraqi Sand. A dark wash was applied.

The fence was painted with Vallejo Mahogany and Vallejo Sand and a few brown washes applied similar to the tree. I applied a thinned grey wash to the tree to give it a subtle grey look.

The green lichen was a black wash followed up with a few colors of green including German camo green and Vallejo Russian green.

I added the figures after the majority of the basing was done and applied a sandy mix which was an off the shelf product and repainted those small areas.

A few grass tufts were added using two tone field tufts and a dead grass type, with a flower tuft to add a highlight by the fence.

The mortar rural base was pretty much identical to the Western front rural base. I decided with the logs to use Vallejo sand and a brown wash for another lighter effect.

Rubble Plastic Bases
These bases were originally designed as a perfect accompaniment for players wanting to base their armies amongst the ruins of Cassino, or any other European town or city. If you want to more about them check out the spotlight which includes more basing guides and information on how to use them.

Eastern Front Rural Base
To simulate the Russian earthy look on this base I applied a black primer then Vallejo USA Tan Earth as the base coat. I applied a heavy Vallejo Green Ochre dry brush followed by a light dry brush of Vallejo Yellow Ochre. Again, a good dark wash over the entire base gave the shadowing and depth required to bring the colors together.

I added the figures after the majority of the basing was done and applied a sandy mix which was an off the shelf product and repainted those small areas.

Some tufts of lighter straw field varieties brought about the Russian steppe feel of the motherland here. Simple and basic, but gives it that look.

In Conclusion
I have never used these bases before today. These plastic Battlefront bases are awesome. The skies the limit and you are only limited by your imagination. These are a few samples of different bases done to represent a series of different themed theatres of which you can do to base your army.
