Mittlere Schutzenpanzerwagen fur 7.5cm KwK 37 L/24, Stummel

Sd Kfz 251/9 C was developed as a close support weapon for Panzergrenadiers to give the heavy firepower that was some times needed to pry out the most determined enemy.

When a new design of half-track was put into production the C model was replaced by the new D model to create the Sd Kfz 251/9 D.

StuGs and other fully tracked assault guns could not always be available when the Panzergrenadiers needed them. Combining the already proven Sd Kfz 251 half-track with the short 7.5cm tank gun created a simple solution.

It was soon named affectionately among the troops as Stummel (stump) because of the guns short length.
It carried 52 rounds of ammunition for the 7.5cm as well as 2 Machine-guns for air and close protection with an ample supply of ammunition.

The ‘Stummel’ in Flames of War

You can have Stummels as a weapons choice in your Gepanzerte Panzergrenadierkompanie as either a small section of the Armoured Heavy Platoon

(page 26 Villers-Bocage or page 28 Festung Europa) or as the six vehicle Armoured Cannon Platoon (page 27 Villers-Bocage or page 28 Festung Europa).

The 7.5cm Assault Gun offers a great direct fire support option for your Panzergrenadiers, great for sorting out those dug in troops (or troops in cover) before an assault.

Quite often the massive firepower of your Panzergrenadiers and their half-tracks will be more than enough to pin dug-in troops before assaults, but the great advantage of the Stummel is its ability to knock out enemy teams before hand, making the assault round for the Panzergrenadier an easier task.

The Sd Kfz 251/9 D (7.5cm) Stummel has a Range of 24”/60cm, ROF 2, AT 9, and FP 3+.

While your Panzergrenadiers approach their target the Stummels can be pounding away, their superior firepower is great for anti-trench work.

Although by themselves as part of an Armoured Heavy Platoon they will not pin the enemy (there are only 2 guns in the Section) their ability to knock teams out, when machine-guns have trouble, is handy. Always use the Armoured Heavy Platoon’s Stummels in conjunction with other units; there are only two of them so they are vulnerable to being swamped by superior numbers. However, in the Armoured Cannon Platoon the six vehicles can be used to deliver a devastating concentration of firepower.

They also have a good Anti-tank rating (9), but I’d use this only when I have to, or against lightly armoured targets like trucks and armoured cars. Don’t go tank hunting with them as most tanks have a similar (24”/60cm) or longer range and much more armour, leave that job to the Marders who have longer range and more punch.
