Road to the Russian Grand Tournament Flames of War 2018

Road to the Russian Grand Tournament Flames of War 2018
By Ilya Semionov
It’s less than two weeks until the Russian Grand Tournament Flames of War 2018 opens in Moscow!

The players are preparing their lists making the last tweaks, the organisers are solving several issues at the same time trying not to forget some little thing that may become a disaster later, but still, a lot of work is already done, and I would like to tell you the story of the last several busy months we had here in snowy Russia.

To make a good Grand Tournament, you have to prepare several ingredients: a competitive atmosphere, which means several lesser events to establish the local metagame and find some new surprising lists or gameplay approaches; a good bunch of friends coming from different cities and countries to expand the experience of the local players and bring the word about your community and country to the players around the Globe, and a good venue to make the Grand Tournament really special.

Voevoda club in cooperation with Geek Wars store held several single tournaments and a team tournament during the last four months. We welcomed the top players of the Moscow community from Portal and Shtandart clubs as well as the newcomers who played their first tournaments. Team Voevoda participated in the team tourney held by Portal club and won it together with Team Shtandard (it was a tie). Russia got its youngest Flames of War tourney winner, Timur Elmuradov, who won a regional tournament in Krasnodar, even getting better score than his own father, Alisher Elmuradov, a good player and an ETC veteran.

We are eager to welcome in Moscow players coming from abroad: Hugo Carmona from Portugal, who was our host last summer before and after ETC Salamanca, Łukasz Kur from Poland, who is brave enough to bring his wife to Moscow with him, and Dušan Kostić and Vladimir Šukalović from Serbia, good friends of the ETC Team Russia since Novi Sad. More foreign players may come next time, as we hope Russian Grand Tournament becomes traditional and will be held every year. We are glad to show Moscow, its great history and everyday life, to our friends from all over the world.

Players from Belarus are frequent guests in Moscow, and we are glad to see them again! Hope for another tourney in Minsk, guys! Russian cities of Krasnodar, Ulyanovsk, Zelenograd will be represented at the Grand Tournament with their best players. Sadly, Saint Petersburg players are too busy to come, but we still hope some of them will join the tourney in the last moment.

Last, but not the least, we got the venue we never could have dreamt of! The Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War (or the Victory Museum) opens its doors for the first Russian Grand Tournament! Dedicated to the pain, suffering and triumph of the Soviet people during the Second World War, it will be the best place to make Flames of War more than a game, but a possibility to pay tribute to those, who defended the world against Nazis.
