D-Day: Waffen SS
The Waffen-SS were the elite combat arm of Adolf Hitler’s personal bodyguard. Fighting wherever the fire was hottest, they had proved their mettle many times in the cauldron of battle on the Eastern Front. With the American and British forces poised to invade Normandy, they were brought west to France to rebuild, tripling their strength to become far stronger than the handful of regular Army Panzer divisions facing the Allies. When the Allies landed on D-Day, the SS were sent in to throw them back into the sea. In the battles that followed, their unswerving determination and stubborn refusal to retreat made them the most feared opponents the Allies faced..

Command Cards are entirely optional and can be added to your force in two ways. You can add them to your normal point cost, just as you would add a unit to your force, or you and your opponent can agree on a set amount of points that each may use just to add Command Cards to your lists.

Many Command Cards are hidden until they are used, so you’re never quite sure what your opponent’s battle plans are until they are revealed. While hidden, Command Cards do not affect their attached unit—a player must reveal them if they wish to gain the benefits of the card. Some Command Cards must be revealed at the start of the game; these cards are used to build your army and have the keyword 'Build'.

Command Card Previews

As you might expect, the Waffen-SS have many of the same Command Cards as their D-Day: German counterparts: Softskin Transport, Pakfront, Tiger Ace, etc. Where you’ll find the biggest differences are the tille cards that allow you to customise your force for a particular division. These flavourful cards give you great options to create a whole new flavour for your force.

As an example, the 1st ‘Leibstandarte’ SS-Panzerdivision cards give you two two different options to take separately or combine. You can make your Formation Commanders (who already have the Old Hands special rule) into Street Fighters who are veterans of the battles to bring Hitler to power. They are experienced soldiers making them Careful and harder to hit, and more likely to survive the destruction of their Formation Command team.

Unwilling Volunteers

At the other end of the spectrum, towards the end of the Normandy Campaign, the division’s panzergrenadiers received an influx of Unwilling Volunteers, misfits sent from the other arms of service. This card reduces their Skill rating and their willingness to counterattack. Combining the two, you end up with an odd combination of extremely experienced and fanatical leaders riding herd on a bunch of reluctant conscripts!

Each of the six Waffen-SS divisions has their own Command Cards, ranging from the poor-quality Volksdeutch of the 17th ‘Götz von Berlichingen’ SS-Panzergrenadier Division or the Inexperienced soldiers of the 10th ‘Freundsberg’ SS-Panzer Division to the Best troops of the 9th ‘Hohenstaufen’ SS-Panzer Division, one for the best divisions in Normandy, whether army or Waffen-SS.
