Kursk: Complete World War II Starter Set (FWBX14)
As the ground hardened after the muddy Russian Spring, the German army prepared to launch their Summer offensive, codenamed Operation Citadel. The target was Kursk, a city in the centre of a huge bulge in the front line, where several Soviet armies could be cut off and destroyed. To ensure success, new weapons were rushed to the front, including Panther tanks. These were combined with several panzer divisions, totalling an impressive 2450 tanks. Over 3600 Soviet tanks were waiting for them, setting the scene for the largest tank battle on the Eastern Front...

Panzer IV tanks have received a new longer barrelled 7.5cm gun, making it ideal for taking out Soviet medium tanks. Like the Panzer III, the Panzer IV also received more frontal armour and sideskirts as well as Zimmerit paste applied to the body of the tank to prevent magnetic anti-tank weapons sticking effectively. More than capable of holding its own in battle, the Panzer IV would not be outshone by the Panther.

The 7.5cm gun version of the Panzer III proved an able support weapon but by the summer of 1943, despite its long and proven battle record, the tank was starting to show its age. To remedy this, it was uparmoured to bring it up to date. Ideally, the panzer divisions were meant to have two battalions of Panthers and one with Panzer IV tanks. While the tankers waited for the production lines to catch up with this demand, the units had to make do with older, but uparmoured, Panzer IIIs.

The Tiger was developed as a breakthrough tank, intended to smash its way through a fortified enemy line. It was heavily armoured and well-armed with a version of the 8.8cm FlaK36 anti-aircraft gun. Wide tracks, and interleaved suspension with 16 large road wheels on each side gives this monster almost as good mobility as a medium tank.

Operation Citadel was delayed to allow time for the Panther tank to make its way to the front Though a high priority was put on the new tank production was delayed due to a lack of specialized machine tools needed for the hull. The first tanks came off the production line in December 1942. The long 7.5cm gun and 100mm of frontal armour on the Panther easily outperformed Allied or Soviet tanks on the field, giving the German crews a sense of invulnerability. The Panther was the most formidable of the German medium tanks and packed one hell of a punch. It was armed with the 7.5cm Rheinmetall KwK42 (L/70). It carried 79 rounds in the tank.

The robust T-34 suited the Red Army. It was simple to make, forgiving of poor maintenance and easy to repair—plus, there were many more rolling out of the factories to replace those that could not be repaired. The latest versions made it much easier for the commander to command while doing their other job as gunner. Their improved hexagonal turret with twin 'Mickey Mouse ear' hatches, often with a cupola for the commander, made the individual tanks faster, and the formations more flexible.

Britain and Canada shipped over 3000 Valentine tanks to the Soviet Union as part of their lend-lease aid. The Valentine was not fast, but it was well armoured and capable of long marches. It was so well liked that, when the Soviet Union eventually ceased production of light tanks, they continued to request shipments of Valentines to fill their need for light tanks.

In January 1943 work began to mount the 85mm gun on the hull of the SU-122. The project was started in response to the appearance of the Tiger 1E on the Russian front. After several prototypes were developed the version mounting the D-5S 85mm gun was adopted and pressed into production. In combat the SU-85 proved very effective able to take on the heaviest of German tanks from long ranges. The SU-85 first found service with SU-122 crews who had lost their vehicles in ferocious combat.
