In preparation for the Ardennes offensive, Hitler had given Otto Skorzeny and his commandos the task of infiltrating American positions to create as much general havoc behind enemy lines as possible. Orders were given to disguise the Panthers to resemble the American M10 tank destroyer and were painted green and given large white stars to complete the illusion. While the vehicles were far from convincing, at least Skorzeny now had the numbers he required to secure a route to the Meuse.

21cm NW42 Rocket Launcher (GE592)
includes three 21cm NW42 Rocket Launchers with crew.

The 21cm NW42 was a larger version of the 15cm NW41. Due to it larger size, the 21cm NW42 had five launching tubes compared to the six on the 15cm NW41. The rockets were spin-stabilised and fired electrically, however the back blast created when launching the rockets left a highly visible smoke trail which left the position vulnerable to counter battery fire. Crews often had to act quickly to relocated their positions to avoid such occurrences.

30cm NW42 Rocket Launcher (GE595)

Five Volks-Werfer Brigaden (People’s Rocket Launcher Brigades) supported the German forces during the Ardennes offensive. Each brigade consisted of two regiments with six batteries of 15cm NW41 rocket launchers and three heavy batteries of either 21cm NW42 or 30cm NW42 rocket launchers, depending on if it was the first or second battalion. The biggest advantage of Nebelwerfer rocket launchers is their ability to saturate a wide area quickly with high-explosive rounds. They are ideal for pinning down an enemy position while attacking forces approach for the assault.
