Usually six horse teams were used for field guns and howitzers from 75mm up to 105mm calibre, while smaller teams of two or four horses could be used for lighter weapons such as anti-tank guns and heavy mortars. Some heavier guns had up to twelve horses in limber teams.

The limber itself was used to carry ammunition, addition tools and equipment as well as transporting the crew, who were often found riding the horses while in limber. Smaller horse teams often pulled the limber and gun only while the crew kept pace by walking.
