Veterans Day Global Campaign
With Chad McElhinney

This Veterans Day the US Battlefront team descended upon Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie, Maryland to participate in our Global Campaign and interact with the local community. Brandon brought his Americans to counter Chad’s German Reconnaissance Company, and we filtered into the tables where other players were struggling to gain a foothold for their nation on the map.

With 6 tables underway all at once, the buzz in the game room was high and many former players stopped by to see about the activity and how the game has progressed from the desert launch of 4th edition. New players were particularly excited and the commentary over how each table was a location on the Campaign Map, and talk of "taking the beaches then moving on to Vierville-sur-Mer” kept going throughout the evening.

I lent my Tigers to a new player wanting to participate, and dug through my bag to replace the points. Luckily, I had started building Fallshirmjager STuGs and had enough assembled and primed to counterattack an American Paratrooper force holding a strategic railroad junction near St-Lo.

We chose to play outflanked, since he had not yet played it, and I was the attacker. My opponent deployed his platoons between the two objectives, with his Formation Command between, and Mortars behind the woods. He put his M-10s and a Cavalry Recon in reserve. I deployed my STuH on my left atop a hill, STuG platoon with HQ and a Fallschirmjager platoon center, and the Recon Scout Half Track company middle right.

I pushed in, focussing on the platoon to my right with my fire, and got my recon platoon dug in within 4” the objective by turn 3 while my Fallshirmjager platoon moved up to prevent his other platoon from dislodging to reinforce. His reserves arrived and bailed StuGs with a few casualties, but couldn’t withstand the return fire and soon the M-10s were burning nicely with a lone M8 withdrawing to safety, before it failed a last stand and returned to the rear to inform the American Command of the dire situation.

Turn 5 saw my SdkfZ 250 scout platoons encroach to within 12” and continue to pin his platoons, causing the occasional casualty, but remained outside of return Bazooka shots. The STuH moved up to begin direct fire, and those Brutal saves eventually added up to where his battered platoon looked suitable to assault, so in went my Recon platoon. But his airborne troops held out, and we returned to our positions with casualties on both sides.

Turn 6 saw the Americans failing to unpin after absorbing an incredible amount of German fire, and as such the Germans held the objective, and earning a hard-fought win at Green two.

All in all, a great night was had, and the tables saw many players, old and new, chattering on about Normandy.

Thanks for having us!
