Despite ‘cheating’ and already painting my US Airborne around Easter in anticipation for the US DDAY book, I felt something else was needed. Leaving my much-loved Airborne  to one side, I took up the mantle of US Armored Commander and set to work on my Sherman Company.

My first 50pts was the Sherman 75mm and Sherman 76mm, before tying the whole force together for 100pts with the support choices of M12 and Sherman 105mm. Now time for my first game!

The First Game with my New Paras...

It has been a week of ups and downs. From managing to get a platoon of x4 Sherman 105mm tanks finished in a rather striking Brown and Green Two-tone camo, as well as assembling and putting together x2 M12 155mm Artillery pieces, I managed to lose a game with my Paratroops against Tim Adcock’s Britsh (Polish 1st Army) armoured. However I have managed to take some learnings away from that game, and later this week I want to try out the Shot In The Dark Mission from the American D-Day book to see how my Paratroopers really work as an ‘against all the odds’ force. Still all this gaming (3rd loss in a row) means I am prime candidate for the wooden spoon, though my achievements are stacking up so I might have a slight tactical advantage if I plan this carefully.

Not being able to find anyone for a game this week (either already playing or scared to face my mighty US Para Troopers) I didn’t hold off and started a new army! This was in part due to looking through the German D-Day book and getting rather excited by the new lists, and also because John Lyons over at OnTableTop challenged me to build a new army within the Hobby League and post about on the OTT project blogs. He is taking US Paras with Sherman Support and I am planning a Panzer IV list with Panzer Grenadiers and Panthers! Also I did a Hobby Hangout Segment with the guys from OTT, which is a featured video on our Hobby League Landing Page.

This last couple of weeks have been all about teaching myself some new techniques with building my German DDAY Army. With the drudge of Pin Washing out of the way, I’ve managed to settle on a camo scheme, which is really simple but I think looks effective. Essentially, it’s using Reflective Green and Camo Brown, dipping a blister sponge and doing a haphazard camo across the Dunkelgelb. Now that I have got the camo down it is tracks, weathering and final highlights. Although I had the horror of breaking a barrel on one of my panthers due to poor storage over the weekend… cue pin vice and brass rod to reattach it to save repainting a new turret. Also, I managed to get a game in vs. one of the Gaming Club guys and armoured assaults from 251 transports are brilliant… I managed to dislodge dug in US Paratroops with my humble Panzergrenadiers in two rounds of assault to take the objective and the win.
