Leopard – West Germans in World War III
With Wayne Turner

Leopard – West Germans in World War III is the first supplement for Team Yankee, the World War III miniatures game. It introduces the forces of West Germany to the turbulent battlefields of World War III in 1985. Leopard and the West German range of Team Yankee models include everything you need to hold back the Red Menace.

Inside you will find background on the West German Bundeswehr (armed forces) and Heer (army) and their role in the initial stages of World War III. You will also find the stories of Panzer Division 1 and Kampfgruppe Müller as they fight to defend their country form the invading communist forces.

Leopard

All across West Germany divisions are being mobilised and reservists flock to their barracks for assignment to the front. With their powerful Leopard 2 tanks and panzergrenadiers mounted in the Marder infantry fighting vehicles, they fight with skill and cunning to slow the Soviet advance, determined to protect their homes and families.

Formations and Units Leopard – West Germans in World War III
Leopard lets you build three different types of fighting companies.

Panzer Kompanie

The Panzer Kompanie is based around the excellent Leopard 2 main battle tank. This cutting-edge weapons is well armoured, with its sophisticated Chobham Armour giving enhanced protection from HEAT (High-explosive Anti-tank) technology commonly used in infantry anti-tank weapons and guided missiles. Its powerful 120mm L/44 gun has an advanced stabiliser, making it just as effective when stationary on the move.

The Leopard 2 tank’s parent company, the Panzer Kompanie, is an adaptable formation. Often one of the Panzer Zug units is swapped with a Panzergrenadier Zug, giving the company an integrated infantry element. The company can also include various division-level units as part of a mixed battlegroup.

Jaguar 1 tank hunters are armed with the powerful HOT anti-tank missile (anti-tank 23).

The Luchs Späh Trupp (armoured car patrol) can advance ahead of your force, discovering the enemy. Gepard anti-aircraft tanks sweep the sky of Soviet aircraft. And M109G self-propelled guns will weaken the enemy’s positions before an attack.

You can also field a Marder Panzergrenadier Kompanie, the West German infantry formation. Like the Panzers, the Panzergrenadiers often swapped one of their three Panzergrenadier Zug units for a Leopard Panzer Zug, for a mixed battlegroup. The Panzergrenadier Zug is a small but well-armed unit. Its three MG3 teams are also armed with Panzerfaust 44 anti-tank rockets (Anti-tank 15). The Zug also has two Milan tank missile teams, a powerful European-developed anti-tank weapon (Anti-tank 22) which can be mounted on your Marder transports or used dismounted. The Marder itself adds additional firepower with its 20mm Rh 202 gun.
Support units available to the Panzergrenadier Kompanie include the M113 Panzermörser 120mm self-propelled mortars for immediate fire support, Jaguar 1 or Jaguar 2 tank hunters for anti-armour support.

Panzeraufklärungs Kompanie Leopard – West Germans in World War III

The third formation you can build is the Panzeraufklärungs (armoured reconnaissance) Kompanie, consisting of Luchs armoured cars and Leopard 1 tanks. The Leopard 1 is an older model of main battle tank, built for manoeuvre and firepower, rather than armour protection. Many were still in service with the West German Heer in 1985. Its role is to provide the Panzeraufklärungs  Kompanie with heavy firepower while the Luchs armoured cards advance ahead.

The Luchs itself is an impressive vehicle. It’s as long as a Leopard and is 8-wheel drive, giving it fast on-road performance as well as excellent cross-country capabilities.

The Luchs Späh Trupp has both the Scout and Spearhead abilities, allowing them to skilfully fulfil their reconnaissance role, pushing to the edge of the enemy positions, then quickly escaping when the fireworks start.

The Panzeraufklärungs battalion has its own infantry for clearing and reconnoitring dense terrain and villages. The Fuchs Panzeraufklärungs Zug is mounted in 6-wheeled Fuchs armoured transports.

Scenarios

Leopard also contains three scenarios to test your fighting skills with your West German force.

  • At the Forward Edge of Battle pits a Marder Panzergrenadier Kompanie against the initial wave of a Soviet attack. You must delay the Soviet advance until you can withdraw to a stronger defensive position.
  • Delaying Attack sees a Leopard 2 Panzer Kompanie advancing to head off a Soviet attack, pinning it in place while their fellow units prepare positions in another location.
  • The third scenario, Flanking Attack, has a Leopard 2 Panzer Kompanie launching a surprise attack on an over-extended Soviet force, which has advanced beyond its immediate resources.

Painting Guides
Leopard also contains a detailed painting guide to help you prepare your West German models for combat. You will find details on what colours to use, with options for painting your vehicles in either the standard NATO three-colour camouflage pattern or the simple Gelboliv (yellow olive) scheme, as well as guides for painting and basing your panzergrenadiers.
