Clavery's Chargers (GFRAB01) Great War French Army Deal
The brave and capable Lieutenant Colonel Amédée Clavery leads the Algerian veterans of the 9e Régiment de Tirailleurs Algériens (9th Algerian Light Infantry Regiment). These fierce warriors will storm across no-man’s-land to take the Bosch in his trenches. They advance in the company of the latest French war machines, the Chars d’Assaut, or as our British Allies call them, 'tanks'. The Schneider CA.1 and Saint Charmond Chars d’Assaut grind forward into battle, bristling with machine-guns and powerful cannons. With heavy machine-guns and savage trench mortars also in support Clavery’s Algerians will be hard to stop.

A Note on Uniform Colour

Unlike the French Metropolitan troops, who wore Horizon Blue, colonial troops like the 9e Régiment de Tirailleurs Algériens wore a French version of Khaki that better matched the far flung parts of the French Empire these troops hailed from.

Most of the models picture in this spotlight have been painted as Metropolitan troops in Horizon Blue, following the painting guide in Great War. Of course, you can paint your force in whichever uniform colour you prefer, depending on your army list.

Clavery's Chargers (GFRAB01)
Here in 1918 our company has changed from its early-war composition and is well adapted to handle the rigours of trench warfare. Artillery, trench mortars and guns, and even tanks have been incorporated into the unit in order to go on the offensive and push the Boches out of our homeland. Knowing that the war is nearly over some of our older poilus may be cautious and a bit weary of the fight; however the spirit of our colonial troops is excellent and they are ready to resume the offensive.

Quick Fire
The canon de 75mm mle 1897 is a superb piece of French engineering. It was the first gun in the world to combine a breech-loading weapon with an effective recoil system. This quick-firing weapon made every other artillery piece obsolete.

Re-roll all failed To Hit rolls from Artillery Bombardments with at least four 75mm mle 1897 guns in total. Batteries with one to three 75mm mle 1897 guns do not need to re-roll successful To Hit rolls.

The Fusiliers Platoons (x2)
contains 1x Command Rifle team, 4x Rifle teams, 2x VB (rifle grenade) teams and 2x MG teams.
Clavery's Chargers (GFRAB01)
The sharp end of our fighting force is the rifleman, much the same as it was in the days of Napoleon. Supported by Chauchat light machine guns and Vivien and Bessières rifles our Fusiliers can handle any challenge in the attack or on defence. When we close in on the enemy our preferred weapon is the bayonet, and the Boches can see how much we have learned since 1914!

They Shall Not Pass
Despite a number of mutinies during 1917, the French were still stubborn fighters in 1918, often unwilling to give up positions easily during the German spring offensives. They held tough, and did not needlessly give ground.

When French platoons test their Motivation to Counterattack in assaults, you may re-roll the die and apply the re-rolled result to all French platoons that failed on the original roll.

Trench Fighters
The French had adopted well-drilled grenade tactics by 1918, using them aggressively in both attack and defence. Using grenadiers with hand-grenades, light-weight Chauchat lightmachine-guns, VB rifle-grenadiers, fixed bayonets, and their natural élan, trenches were taken with an aggressive spirit.

Rifle and Pistol teams from French Fusiliers Platoons hit on a roll of 2+ in Assaults (instead of 3+ for being veterans). VB and MG teams support the assault from behind the charge, and therefore do not benefit from the Trench Fighters special rule.

Trench Warfare
French troops are trained for trench warfare. Their operational plan is to make a short deliberate advance under cover of massed artillery fire, then fortify their position to hold it while the artillery comes up to repeat the process. While the advance is slow, it is sure and will eventually result in the defeat of the enemy.

When conducting Defensive Fire, Infantry and Gun teams that are Dug In or in Entrenchments can shoot over any Man-packed or Light Gun teams that are also Dug In or in Entrenchments.

The Fusiliers Machine-Gun Platoon
contains 1x Command Rifle team, 4x Hotchkiss mle 1914 HMG teams.
Clavery's Chargers (GFRAB01)
In the front lines our company is supported by the new Hochkiss mle 1914 heavy machine-gun. It fires the same cartridge as our standard rifles and can sustain a rate of fire of 450 rounds per minute. Well placed in defence, these guns will make the Germans think twice about attacking our front line.

Clavery's Chargers (GFRAB01)
German machine-gun nests and pillboxes are not the obstacle they once were due to our excellent collection of trench mortars. The British 76mm Stokes mortar can knock out strongpoints up close in the attack. The heavier 58mm Type 2 mortars will stay in our trench line or close behind it to knock out the most difficult of enemy positions.
