Dutch Flames Of War Nationals 2014 Dutch Flames Of War Nationals 2014
with Wijnand Dalmijn

On 18 October Flames Of War players from Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands merged on the Prins Bernard Kazerne to fight it out for the title of overall champion at this year’s Dutch Flames Of War Nationals.  The tournament was contested over three battles; starting in the morning and ending at 7:00pm with the missions predetermined by the tournament organiser.
The overall atmosphere in the tournament was very good; which was reflected in the feedback I was given by players. The match-ups were enjoyable, and the players were will to help out other players during the course of the games. In this regard, I felt that the tournament was a huge success; as ultimately tournaments are first and foremost meant to be fun for everyone involved.

Many great battles were fought during the course of the day, the outcome of some hinging on a single dice roll. Players fielding balanced lists were often confronted by players who had the idea foil to their force. Soviets were trying to come to grips with stubborn German defenders who managed to stall an attack with clever use of barbed wire.

Dutch Flames Of War Nationals 2014 Meanwhile on another table, the 82nd Airborne clashed with a German Panzerkompanie that kept withdrawing; frustrating the Paratroopers who wanted to get up close and personal.  But when an armoured list is nominated as a defender you know you’re in for a rough ride as an infantry company!

It wasn’t all one-way traffic for the armoured list however. A StuG Batterie tried desperately to hold-off a Polish Home Army (or Batalion Armii Krajowej) but was no match for the amount of bodies the Polish defenders were able to throw into the fight. Ultimately, many of the German players opted for Panzerkompanies; many taking the new Jagdtiger lists available in Desperate Measures. Overall, it was pleasing to see a variety of different types companies on display.

These were just a few of the incredible battles that were fought and it was amazing to see such a level of sportsmanship on display in such a competitive environment. The level of painting on display was reflected by the player’s attention to detail to getting the colours right and it was honestly a really hard choice to pick a winner; everyone did a great job with their miniatures.

I would like to thank everyone involved; in particular those who helped make this entire event possible: Jurie van der zwaan, Rob Pasman, Subcultures, and Matt Sulley from Battlefront who helped with the organisation. A special thanks to the Fallen Angels for helping with making the tables look amazing!  Without their help and input I do not think the tournament would have been this much of a success.
