Designed as a replacement for the 6pdr, the 17pdr first entered service in August 1942 as the 17/25pdr. The 17pdr gun was hastily placed on the 25pdr carriage Mk I to be rushed to North Africa to deal with the dreaded Tiger.

It was more than capable of dealing with the Tiger. It fired a 7.65kg (17lb) projectile at 884m (2900ft) per second to penetrate 130mm (5.12in) of 30° sloped armour at 915m (1000yards).

The 25pdr carriage proved hardy enough to stand up to the punishment handed to it by the 17pdr.

Around 100 of this version of the 17pdr were made, before the official split trail carriage was introduced.
