Flames Of War at Gen Con 2016
Great events run by Able Kompanie
With Chris Fretts
Able Kompanie had a great time at Gen Con 2016 this past weekend, running three Flames Of War Tournaments and our Stalingrad intro game. Each Tournament was a single-day three-round event for up to 30 players. We rotate the time periods each year and this year we were chronological with Early War on Thursday, Mid War on Friday and Late War on Saturday.
Check out Able Kompanie's tournaments at last year's Gen Con...
|
We keep to the one-day format to allow players plenty of time to experience the rest of Gen Con over the weekend. Nevertheless, a significant percentage of players choose to play in two or even all three of the Tournaments. For those those players, we award a Top General prize for whoever ends up with the most Victory Points over the weekend. |
|
Mission selection for all of Able Kompanie’s Tournaments is determined by our Spinning Wheel of Doom. The division of the wheel is done by the TO and gives him a little leeway to guide the mission selection while still keeping it mostly random. It’s also more fun for the group to watch it spin rather than someone picking a mission by rolling dice or picking a chit from a bag.
Sometimes more random than others (Right)

|
Terrain was provided by Battlefront, making it far easier to put together the 15 tables for the Tournaments. We changed out the desert tables for the Late War Tournament.

Stalingrad Introductory Game |
We also ran six sessions of our 6-player Stalingrad intro game. This is our sixth year running this event, and it always sells out within hours of tickets going on sale. Two of our Gamemasters show these mostly new players how to play the game, focusing on the basics of Move, Shoot & Assault. |
Each player has a small force of infantry and a tank or gun platoon. We have modified the scoring for this game giving each side points each turn they hold objectives on the table to keep up the competition throughout the session. They receive more points for holding objectives on the opposite side of the table. Hopefully we sparked some new players to take up the game. In the six sessions we had three Soviet and three German Victories. |
Thanks to all the players who came out to our events. We had about 80 individual players, between in the three tournaments and the Stalingrad game. Thanks to all the members of Able Kompanie who helped to put together a great weekend of Flames Of War gaming. And a big thanks to David Griffin and Battlefront for helping us out with terrain and prize support.
~ Chris.
