Adepticon 2016 Report
with David Griffin

This year at Adepticon we decided to try a one-day Nationals tournament on Saturday to allow people that worked Fridays to come in and have some fun. This left Friday free, and you know the bosses hate a vacuum. Enter Team Yankee: new, exciting and using the same battlefields their fathers fought over 40 years previously.

I did not think Team Yankee was quite tournament ready yet, as the last pieces rolled out a week before, so I looked in my bag-of-games and viola! Mega-battle! What better way to show off your forces to new and interested people than push large amounts of them around the table with lots of smoke and carnage?

Six players made it to the table – not a lot but an important first step, as we already have six more people wanting to play next year.

The Soviets were able to smash the front line but took such horrendous losses I doubt they would have been able to move on. The ability to keep playing with support units and airpower after your company breaks was a big factor to those whose units might not have made offerings to the dice gods the night before.

The Nationals were also a success, as attendance was up this year. The four two-hour rounds worked well and made the players change up their normal armies and tactics. Dave Vigor did not play Strelkovy!!! (I’ve been trying to get him to play a different army for three years!)

The faster play style made for more intense games as players had to move out. Random missions threw another factor people had to take into account and could not build lists around. I would like to thank the players for stepping up to the challenge, which is what the Nationals are all about.

Thanks to all the players in the Nationals for taking part, and Congratulations to this year's overall winner, Chris Fretts!

We had quite a few new faces from the nearby area; hopefully they will go home and spread the word so we get more locals out next year. Next North American Nationals?

  • West Coast Nationals at Kublacon in San Francisco, CA.
  • Historicon in Fredericksburg, VA
  • Southern Nationals at Wargamescon in Austin, TX
  • Canadian Nationals in Ottawa, Ontario
