Rallypoint 2014
with Rob Shirley
The weekend of 4 – 5 October saw the 40th edition of Rallypoint held here in Hamilton. Unlike past years that have been Early-war, this year’s Flames Of War event was an Late-war Escalation tournament.
There were four games played on the Saturday with an addition two games played on the Sunday. The six games were split up into two of each of the mission types; Meeting Engagement, Defensive Battle, and Mobile Battle.

The actual missions played Dust Up, Counterattack, Hold The Line,
Cauldron, Surrounded, and Free-For-All with all games played on standard
6’ x 4’ tables.
There were two games were played at each points level, beginning with 1015 points, followed by 1325 points and finally 1655 points. The length of the matches varied from the standard two and half hours down to one hour and forty-five minutes. Lists were built based on the compulsory Combat Platoon(s) and the ability of the Company HQ and Support Platoons to be completely change. In the end we had three Soviets, three American, two British and eight German forces. There were more Armoured and Mechanised companies than there were Infantry.
Two thirds of the players came from Hamilton, with a smattering of players from Whangarei, Auckland, Tauranga, and Napier. With NapCon held in New Plymouth the previous weekend, we did not get the usual continent of players from Taranaki and Whanganui. The date change caught a few of the regular Hamiltonian’s out. Despite these factors, the quality of the field was still high and will no doubt result in a few players receiving invitations to Masters in Wellington on 6 - 7 December.

There were eleven tables in total made up using the terrain kindly supplied by club members. This allowed Isaac Henderson, the tournament’s umpire, to shift games around with relative ease. I know the Battlefront City, the Cratered City, the Bocage Table and the Italian Winter tables that I contributed would provide a challenge for some armies. I balanced that with three non-themed generic tables.
Nobody received less than the perfect score of 5 points for Sportsmanship in every game they played and with each player contributing two votes towards the Best Sport award; 14 of the 16 players received at least one vote.
