Flames Of War At Gen Con 2014
with Able Kompanie
Able Kompanie recently held three Tournaments and an intro game event at Gen Con 2014 in Indianapolis, Indiana. With thousands of games and events to choose from each year at Gen Con we found it best to offer a one-day twenty four player tournaments in each period rather than multi-day tournaments. We also run our very popular Stalingrad six-player intro game over the weekend. This gave players of all skill levels and interests a chance to get as much or as little Flames Of War gaming as they want.
Tickets to Stalingrad sold out as soon as they went on sale. The game was played on a beautifully sculpted board with buildings and terrain created and painted by the Able Kompanie members. We provided everything needed to play as well as two of our members to teach players how to play. We have created a ‘Capture the Flag’ kind of scenario so each side gets points each turn they hold any of the nine objectives with the objectives in the enemy’s area worth more points. Each player has a small combined arms force – though each of the Soviet players has either a Strelkovy or Shraaf Batalon! It’s a big challenge for the much smaller German Veterans attempting to hold off the Soviet horde of Conscripts. This year most of the games were close finishes and all of the players had a great time learning how to play. Thanks to Battlefront, every player received an Open Fire Quick Start Guide and a plastic tank sprue.

We had thirty six different players participate in the three single-day tournaments. Several hardy souls played in all three tournaments. Players came from Seattle to South Carolina as well as Canada and Germany. Our Thursday tournament is always a smaller point total for those players who want to play a ‘Cigar box’ army and then the Friday and Saturday are at the year’s point totals. There were sixty two different army lists played over the three time period representing forces from thirteen different nations. A big thank you to Battlefront for providing us with their travelling terrain for the twelve European and four North African Tables (switched out for Early-war and Mid-war). Missions were chosen randomly by a player chosen to spin Able Kompanie’s Spinning Wheel of Doom.
Here are the results for the three tournaments:
