Genesis of an Army: La Nueve: The Spaniards
by Mike Haught

Well, I’ve been putting it off and putting it off, until now… It seems like it was only a year ago that I was painting armoured infantry—wait, it was! Last year I painted two Armored Rifle Platoons for my 91st Cavalry Recon army I took to the 2007 WCP Flames Of War tournament. And here I am, painting two more! Same uniforms, weapons, colors… Why? Because I love Allied lists, and America is great!

So I got to work starting the infantry. I cleaned them up, glued them to their bases and applied vinyl spackling to flush up the infantry bases. I used Selly’s Rapidfilla, but any spackle will do.

I primed them black and then basecoated them with Tamiya Khaki. The particularly Tamyia savvy painters out there will note that these pictures reveal that the basecoat is, in fact, not Khaki, but rather Khaki Drab. That’s because I couldn’t find my Khaki. I looked through my pile of paints, searched my hobby room, looked in my modelling stuff, and just couldn’t find it. So I went with Khaki Drab instead.

After it was painted and I sat down to start my detail work I found it in with my Vallejo paints… Oh well, such is the perils of not being overly organized.

Anyway, I got to work painting the khaki jackets, the Tommy Green (FWP345) webbing and the brown boots. Then I got to the trousers and guess what? No Wool Brown (FWP328)… After another search, I came to the conclusion that I didn’t have any remaining after my last project (It’s also one of my favorite basing colors) so I had to buy a new one this afternoon. That’s why my troops don’t have pants!

So Ive got flesh, guns, pants, washes and highlights left to do this week on this platoon. The second platoon is all ready to be painted as well. I’ll certainly be cutting this project close!

End of Week 7!

I'm cutting it really close. I have two platoons of infantry left to paint and base. With the GT a mere week away, I'm staring down a scary deadline! We'll see if we can this done!
