Assembling The T-34 obr 1940 Company
with Blake Coster
The T-34 was the most-produced tank of World War II. When the German Wehrmacht first encountered it in battle in 1941, German tank generals von Kleist and Guderian called it “the deadliest tank in the world.”

The T-34 obr 1940 Company box set contains the options to model three different variants of the T-34 featured in Barbarossa; the T-34 obr 1940, the T-34 obr 1941, and the T-34/57 obr 1941. But before we break out the hobby tools and plastic cement, let's ensure the entire contents of the T-34 obr 1940 Company box set are all present and correct. |
One Box; So Many Different Tanks
In addition to the T-34 obr 1940, T-34 obr 1941 and T-34/57 obr 1941 you can also use this box set to create the T-34 obr 1942 or the T-34/85 obr 1944.

Components Required For The T-34 Hull |
I'll begin construction of the T-34 obr 1940 box set by demonstrating how to assemble the hull of the
vehicle first. Of the three different variants
of the T-34 that can be modelling using this box set, one thing they all have in common is the same hull configuration.
The components required to assemble the hull of the T-34 can be seen below highlighted in white on the sprues below. |
Assembling The T-34 Hull
Step 1. Begin assembly of the T-34 hull by attaching the tracks to each side of the hull.
Below: Each track has been
keyed to correspond with a particular side of the hull; this aids in
ensuring the correct orientation of the tracks when assembling the
miniature. |
Tip: Although regular Hobby Glue can be used to
assemble plastic vehicles, we recommend that you use good quality
plastic cement instead. It gives the strongest bond when gluing plastic
to plastic. |

Below: The right-hand side track attached to the hull. |
Below: The left-hand side track attached to the hull. |
Tip: When referring to
left or right-hand side in regards to a Flames Of War miniature, the
orientation is determined as if looking at the vehicle from the rear. |
Step 2. Next, attach the top section of the hull to the lower section. |
Step 3. Attach the left-hand side mudguard to the front of the hull.

Step 4. Attach the right-hand side mudguard to the front of the hull. |
Step 5. Next, attach the hull machine-gun to the glacis plate of the T-34 hull. |
Step 6. Finally, attach the exhausts to the rear of the T-34 hull.

Components Required For The T-34 obr 1940 Turret |
The different between the three variants of the T-34 included in the box set all lay in the turret. More
specically the different guns mounted in each version. You may have
also noticed that the box set includes six resin turrets; why six? More
on this later but let's begin by constructing a T-34 obr 1940 turret.
The
components required to assemble the turret of the T-34 obr 1940 can be
seen below and highlighted in white on the sprue on the left.
Assembling The T-34 obr 1940 Turret |
Step 1. Begin by attaching the turret hatch to the top of the turret.
Below: The turret hatch can be either the plastic or metal version as there are six turret hatches in total included in the box set (three on the plastic sprues and three individual metal versions. Enough for the six resin turrets included in the box set.
Step 2. Attach the metal 76mm L-11 gun to the front of the turret.
Below: With the correct gun attached, the T-34 obr 1940 is now fully assembled. |
Components Required For The T-34 obr 1941 Turret |
While the T-34 obr 1940 utilsed the 76mm F-11 gun, this weapon was later replaced by the much improved 76mm F-34 gun. This new combination was given the designation T-34 obr 1941.
The
components required to assemble the turret of the T-34 obr 1941 can be
seen below and highlighted in red, white, and blue on the sprue on the right.
Assembling The T-34 obr 1941 Turret |
Step 1. Begin by attaching the turret hatch to the top of the turret. |
Below: Once more, the turret hatch can be either the plastic or metal
version. Now about those six turrrets; they have been included in order for you to model both the T-34 obr 1940 and T-34 obr 1941 and simply swap the turrets depending on your gaming requirements. |
Step 2. Next, attach the gun mantlet to the front of the turret.
Step 3. Attach the main gun to the gun mantlet. |

Swapping The Turrets with Rare-earth Magnets
Also included in the box set are nine rare earth magnets. These are included so you can mix and match the turrets and hulls with ease. To do this, simply glue a rare-earth magnet into the recess
in the bottom of the each turret and then
glue another magnet into recess located on the top of the hulls. You
now have a safe and
secure way of attaching the turrets to the hulls and swapping them around quickly and easily.

Components Required For The T-34/57 obr 1941 Turret |
A small number of T-34 obr 1941s were fitted with the 57mm ZIS-4 high velocity gun. While it outperformed the 76mm F-34 in armour peneration, the size of the projectile meant it wasn't as quite as effective firing high explosive (or HE) rounds.
The
components required to assemble the turret of the T-34/57 obr 1941 can be
seen below and highlighted in green, white, and blue on the sprue on the left.

Assembling The T-34/57 obr 1941 Turret |
Step 1. Begin by attaching the turret hatch to the top of the turret; this can be either the a plastic or metal version. |
Step 2. Next, attach the gun mantlet to the front of the turret. |
Step 3. Attach the main gun to the gun mantlet. |

Adding A Tank Commander
Step 1. Model the turret hatch in the open position.
Step 2. Next, add the Tank Commander of choice to the inside of open turret hatch and we've got a T-34 obr 1940 complete with Tank Commander. |

I hope you find this assembly guide useful when it comes time to assemble your own T-34 obr 1940 Company box set.
As always; happy modelling!
