Wayne and Andrew's deployment Game 1

Wayne-Con 2014

Report by Wayne Turner

A while ago I decided I want to get some of the guys to finish off their Flames Of War Early-War forces. So I decided to schedule a tournament in a couple of month to aim for. I managed not to get everybody in, but I did lure the hard core from the Studio to take part, plus a noob.

Both Phil and Mike had a couple of armies ready to go and wanted to see what the mix of forces were playing before choosing what they would take. This they did to ensure we had a good variety of forces fielded.

Andrew went for Finns from Rising Sun using the new Winter Finns sculpted by James. I fielded Hungarians from the forth coming additional digital Intelligence Briefings supporting the release of Barbarossa.

Chris fielded the French he had been working on over the last two years or so. Finally we roped our new Studio painter Aaron in to playing and furnished him with German Panzerkompanie from the Battlefront collection. Mike Haycock also wanted to join in, but I managed to schedule the Saturday games on the same day as another tournament in town.

So we had six players and in the end they took:

Wayne Turner: Hungarian Kőnnyűharckocsizó Század (Light Tank Company) (Digital)

Mike Haught: German Mittlere Panzerkompanie (Medium Armoured Company) (Hellfire & Back)

Phil Yates: British Armoured Regiment (Blitzkrieg)

Chris Townley: French Compagnie de Fusiliers-Voltigeurs (Active) (Blitzkrieg)

Andrew Haught: Finnish Jääkärikomppania (Light Infantry Company) (Rising Sun)

Aaron Mathie: German Mittlere Panzerkompanie (Medium Armoured Company) (Blitzkrieg)

I’m not a great fan of three game tournaments, so I decided we would play one game on Friday night after work (this would mean sacrificing post work beers) and then play three games on Saturday, leaving everybody’s Sunday free.

Friday Night, Game 1 Pincer (modified so the defender had to choose only one flank for his reserves to arrive)

Mike Played Chris, a 6-1 victory to Mike.

Wayne's forces begin their advance Game 1

Wayne Played Andrew, a 6-1 victory to Andrew.

Phil Played Aaron, a 5-2 victory to Phil, but good work from Aaron to score a point off Phil considering it was his first ever game of Flames Of War.

In my game against Andrew I had trouble knocking out enough of any one of Andrew’s platoons to make them take a Morale Check. I did managed to ride my Huszár cavalry platoon all the way down one flank to attack his artillery from the rear, but they then broke and vacated the battlefield. His T-28 tanks and guns slowly picked off my little Toldi I tanks until my Morale broke. It didn’t help that my artillery failed to Range-In for five turns.

Saturday Morning, Game 2 Counterattack

Wayne Played Phil, a 6-1 victory to Phil.

Andrew Played Mike, a 6-1 victory to Mike.

Chris Played Aaron, a 6-1 victory to Chris.

These games were a little more hard fought than the results indicated.

In my game I was the defender after a roll-off, which meant that with Mobile Reserves all but one of my tank platoons were off table in Reserve, and all my on table platoons were without their transports. I made one major mistake in putting my Pioneers on the table instead of my Huszárs, which would have made a much better job of quickly seizing an objective ahead of Phil’s forces moving across the table.

Wayne's Pioneers advance on the Objective Game 2 I peppered away at Phil’s tanks with my tanks as mine arrived on table, but his return fire was always much heavier than mine with his Tally-Ho and anti-tank 7. His poxy Mark IV light tanks with their Co-ax MG and 15mm Besa gun made short work of my Pioneers attempting to contest the objective, despite my 37mm anti-tank guns rolling up in support.

Chris Played Andrew, a 6-1 victory to Andrew.

Wayne Played Aaron, a 5-2 victory to Wayne.

Wayne's troops hold the right objective Game 3 I was defending again, after failing another roll-off, but I didn’t mind so much in this game as I have much more infantry and guns than Aaron did. He had a mix of Panzer III and Panzer II tanks with some armoured cars and Bunkerflak tank-hunters in support. The real winner for me in this game was my two 40mm Bofors guns who made short work of Aaron’s Panzer III tanks, this left me with just the Panzer II light tanks and the Bunkerflaks to deal with. Aaron’s probe down the left flank with a pair of armoured cars tied up my dismounted Huszárs on one flank who kept their head down until I could withdraw the objective.
However, my tanks on that flank got shot up by the Bunkerflaks, before they could start picking off my artillery. The battle was won on the other flank where the Bofors guns and the Toldi I light tanks slowly ground down the Panzer II tanks and the other armoured car patrol. After the battle I realised I had forgotten to place my 37mm anti-tank guns from ambush, which would of help clean up the Panzer II tanks a little faster. Saturday Afternoon, Game 4 Free-for-All

Mike Played Aaron, a 6-1 victory to Mike.

Phil Played Andrew, a 4-3 victory to Phil.

Chris Played Wayne, a 5-2 victory to Chris.

Chris has a lot of guns. He had two batteries of artillery, two lots of two 25mm anti-tank guns, and two 47mm anti-tank guns. I was a little worried for the safety of my little Toldi I tanks. As it turned out it was a little closer than I thought, with just some bad Motivation rolled on the right flank letting me down.

Wayne's tanks take on the French armour. Wayne vs Chris Game 4

I launched a cavalry charge against Chris’s heavy artillery on the flanks, he just managed to get five hits and pin them, then I failed four saves, promptly failed the Platoon Morale Test, then the Company Commander joined them and they failed again! In the centre I took Chris’s Panhard armoured cars and S-35 Somua tanks with 11 Toldi I tanks and three 37mm anti-tank guns.

I knocked out a Panhard platoon and the Somua tanks. I eventually lost most of my Toldi I tank and was forced to take a Company Morale Check, which I failed. I only got a 2-5 result due to Chris having nine platoons.

All in all it was a fun tournament and I was able to test out my new force. Next year I hope to run something similar again, maybe with a few more guys from Battlefront NZ playing.
