Based on their experiences in North Africa coupled with intelligence coming out of Europe left little doubt in the mind of the Allies that minefields would pose a serious threat once the liberation of Europe begun. Developing the ability to clear said minefields under combat condition quickly became a top priority.

T1E3 Aunt Jemima Mine Rollers (US061) The obvious solution was to equip an armoured vehicle such as a tank with a method to neutralise minefields. Two methods of denotation were developed; the pressure type such as rollers and flails which relied on creating enough physical force to explode a mine upon contact or the concussion type which relied on the concussive force of an explosive charge to detonate or disable mines.

Note: The T1E3 Aunt Jemima Mine Rollers blister pack contains the mine rollers only.

The T1E3 Aunt Jemima utilised the pressure type system in the form of two rollers each made up of five large metal discs. Propelled along by a Sherman tank, the system was nicknamed after a famous pre-made pancake mix (Aunt Jemima’s) as the discs were said to resemble large pancakes. The size of each disc; 10cm wide and 2.46m in height meant their massive weight (26,000kg total) provided the necessary ground pressure to detonate any mines it encountered.

While it performed well during testing, once in the field the system proved difficult to manoeuvre especially when it came to making a U-turn. The weight of the roller also meant the system was prone to bogging down once any form of soft terrain was encountered.

Mine Flails and Rollers
A mine flail uses a rapidly rotating spindle mounted on arms in front of the tank to whip the ground with long lengths of chains. The chains either slap the mine hard enough to disable it or to strike the pressure plate and detonate it well clear of the crew hunkered behind the tank’s armour. Rollers function very similarly to mine flails, but instead of striking the mine with chains they simply roll a heavy steel drum over the top of them.

Tanks fitted with Mine Flails or Mine Rollers do not need to make a Motivation Test to enter a Minefield. However, they do need to take a Skill Test to cross safely and risk being Destroyed in the same way as other vehicles if they fail it.

If a Mine Flail or Mine Roller passes safely through a Minefield without being Bailed Out or Destroyed, remove the section of Minefield they crossed.

Overloaded
Super-heavy tanks and heavily-laden assault guns often overload their engines and suspensions, making them very poor at crossing obstacles.

When required to take a Bogging Check to cross Difficult Going, an Overloaded vehicle becomes Bogged Down on a roll of 1 or 2, rather than the usual 1. An Overloaded vehicle must re-roll successful Skill Tests to cross Very Difficult Going.
