with Blake Coster

The new all-plastic Tank Killer Company for the Soviet features four different vehicle variants: the SU-100, the SU-85, the SU-85M and the SU-100M. In this article, I'll demonstrate how to assembly each variant. So let's break out the hobby tools and plastic cement and get started.

Parts Required For The Lower Hull
Despite there being four different variants included in the box set, they all share the same lower hull. The components required to assemble the lower hull can be seen below highlighted in green on the appropriate frames.

Assembling The Lower Hull
Step 1. Begin assembly by attaching the tracks to the lower hull section.

Note: Each track has been keyed to correspond with a particular side of the lower hull; this aids in ensuring the correct orientation of the tracks when assembling the miniature.

Tip: When referring to left- or right-hand side in regards to a Flames Of War miniature, the orientation is determined as if looking at the vehicle from the rear.

Assembling The SU-100
The parts highlighted in green represent the components required to assemble the SU-100; the parts highlighted in red are optional and can be used to add some modelling variety to your miniatures if you wish.
Tip: Although regular Hobby Glue can be used to assemble plastic vehicles, we recommend that you use good quality plastic cement instead. It gives the strongest bond when gluing plastic to plastic.

Assembling The SU-100M
The SU-100M is the post-war version of the SU-100. In the Flames Of War universe it features in Fate Of A Nation. The United Arab Republic can field the SU-100M as a Divisional Support option.

Assembling the SU-100M requires only the addition of a stowage bin to the right-hand side of our already assembled SU-100 model. The stowage bin in question can be seen highlighted in green on the hull frame shown in the example on the right

Assembling The Tank Killer Company Assembling The SU-85M
The SU-85M was a stopgap measure created due to a shortage of 100mm guns. Therefore, vehicles that were destined to become SU-100s were fitted with 85mm guns until production of the 100mm gun could catch up, giving us the SU-85M.

Assembling the SU-85M requires simply replacing the 100mm gun of our already assembled SU-100 with the 85mm version instead. The 85mm gun in question can be seen highlighted in green on the hull frame.

Adding A Tank Commander To The SU-100, SU-100M & SU-85M
Adding a Tank Commander to the SU-100, SU-100M and SU-85M is done in the same way, as these variants all share the same upper hull.
Step 1. Replace the closed Commader's cupola with the open version of the cupola. Step 2. Add the Tank Commander figure of you choice.

Tip: Add a Tank Commander is ideal for differentiating the Platoon Commander from the rest of the platoon. This makes identification much easier for you and your opponents when playing Flames Of War. Use Hobby Glue to attach the metal tank commander - remember, plastic cement is only for gluing plastic to plastic.
Adding A Tank Commander To The SU-85
Step 1. Attach the Commander's hatch in an open position as seen in the example below. Step 2. Add the Tank Commander figure of you choice.

Using The Optional Components
The optional components that can be use on all vehicle variants include the individual fuel drums and a section of spare track, both of which can be found on the accessory frame highlighted in red in the example on the right. Feel free to mix and match the individual fuel drums that are on the accessory frame with the paired version found on the hull frame.

I hope you find this assembly guide useful when it comes time to assemble your own SU-100s or your SU-100Ms, SU-85Ms, or SU-85s for that matter.

Happy modelling!
