The Open Fire Quick Start Guide
The Open Fire box set has a 52-page Quick Start Guide to help beginners learn Flames Of War. As a beginners guide, it is closer to a graphic novel than a rulebook, using diagrams, photographs, and tabletop exercises as much as possible rather than long wordy explanations.

Like the Boot Camp videos, this booklet is organised as a teaching aid rather than a rulebook. After all there is a full copy of the rulebook in the box as well, so there isn’t much point in duplicating it, even in an abbreviated form. The Quick Start Guide starts by teaching the new player how shooting works, then once they have mastered the basics of shooting, the reader goes on to movement and more advanced shooting concepts like shooting on the move and using terrain to conceal their troops. Finally, having learned how to move and shoot, they go on to on to assaults and playing a full game.

The second half of the booklet shows where to go next with a cut down Intelligence Briefing for each side allowing the players to add more tanks, infantry, guns, artillery, and aircraft. By the time the player is ready to add artillery, aircraft, armoured cars, engineers and other specialist troops, they will have read the relevant parts of the rulebook, so these are not covered in the Quick Start Guide.
