He transferred to the 78. Infanteriedivision just as the division was sent to Russia, where he was wounded while manning a machine-gun after its crew had been wiped out by a 76mm shell. This earned him an Iron Cross and a promotion to Feldwebel, or sergeant.

In 1943, Uthoff and the 78. Infantriedivision reorganised as a Sturmdivision. During the conversion, Uthoff acquired the latest weapons, such as his own personal Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle and a pile of Panzerfaust launchers for his men.

Feldwebel Dietrich Uthoff's Special Rules
Ambush!
Feldwebel Uthoff used craters, destroyed tanks and bombedout trenches to surprise hapless Soviet tanks.

Uthoff may be deployed using the Ambush special rule in the rulebook in addition to any other platoons that would
normally be deployed in Ambush.

While defending, Uthoff may deploy in Ambush even in missions that do not normally use the Ambush special rule.

Feldwebel Dietrich Uthoff (GSO198) In late June 1944, Operation Bagration erupted in front of Uthoff and his men and by the afternoon of the first day the platoon had been reduced to just six men. He asked for two volunteers and ordered the remainder of the men to rejoin the division in Orsha.

Uthoff and the volunteers were last seen dashing between mortar craters and upturned earth, each with three Panzerfaust launchers. Several Soviet T-34 and IS-2 tanks exploded as they made their way through no-man’s-land.
