Gebirgsjäger Platoon (GE832)
with three Jäger Squads, one HQ section with Panzerknacker / Panzerfaust upgrades.
The Gebirgsjäger or mountain troops were light infantry trained for mountain warfare. Due to the terrain they operated in, the traditional support available to the regular infantrymen of the German Army such as heavy artillery or tanks were not available to the Gebirgsjäger.

"Gebirgsjäger Platoons are Mountaineers."
|
The men who made up at typical Gebirgsjäger unit were expected to carry all their personal kit and weapons, usually much more than what would be carried by regular infantrymen. On top of this, they were expected to scale sheer cliffs and mountains while doing so.

"Some infantry like the Gebirgsjäger are trained as mountaineers and are able to scale terrain that is impassable to normal infantry."
Mountaineers treat steep hillsides as normal Cross-country going and mountains as Difficult Going. Mountaineers can cross impassable cliffs and similar obstacles by making a skill test. See page 46 of the main rulebook for more details. |
Gebirgsjäger Command Rifle/MG Team
|
"Although part of the Heer (Army),
Gebirgsjäger fought as part of both Heer and Luftwaffe (Air Force)
divisions like 1. Fallschirmjägerdivision during the Cassino campaign."
Gebirgsjäger are not classed as Allied Platoons when fighting as part of a Fallschirmjägerkompanie at Cassino.

Gebirgsjäger Rifle/MG Teams

|
As the war progressed and Germany’s fortunes on
the battlefield begun to turn, the Gebirgsjäger were often called upon
to perform the jobs of the regular infantrymen on the frontline lines;
often far from the mountainous environments where they performed best.
|
|
|
Whatever the situation the men of the Gebirgsjäger divisions faced, they
performed gallantly in the face of adversity due to their high levels
of morale and the belief in the leadership of their commanding officers.
|
|
|
"During the Cassino campaign, 1. Fallschirmjägerdivision took command of
the mountain troops of 100. Gebirgsjägerregiment (100th Mountain Rifle
Regiment, pronounced ger-beerrgs jai-gerr ray-gi-ment) holding the left
flank atop the Cassino masiff." |
|
|
"German mountain troops proved crucial in mountain
fighting throughout Europe. Their expertise served them well in battles
against Goums born and bred in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and
Indians trained in battle against the Afghans in the mountainous Hindu
Kush." |
